CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic sample paper 2026-27: question 38
From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2026-27, section E, question 38, for 4 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q38 · 4 marks · Case-basedCompetency-basedProbability
A labourer prints 400 T-shirts in a day. The supervisor checked the T-shirts and found that 312 prints were good, 54 prints were with minor defects and rest of the prints were of major defects.
Harish, a customer will buy a T-shirt only if it is good but a trader will buy, if it has no major defect. If a random T-shirt is picked, then
- (i)1 mark
find the probability that Harish will buy a T-shirt.
- (ii)1 mark
find the probability that a trader will buy the T-shirt.
- (iii)(A)2 marks
find the probability that the T-shirt is not good.
OR
(iii)(B)2 marksfind the probability that neither Harish nor trader buy the T-shirt.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
First find how many T-shirts have major defects.
Hint 2
Harish accepts only good prints. The trader accepts both good and minor-defect prints.
Hint 3
'Not good' is the complement of 'good'. 'Neither buys' means the T-shirt has a major defect.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
Total T-shirts = 400. Good = 312, minor defect = 54, major defect = .
- 1 mark
(i) Harish buys only a good T-shirt:
- 1 mark
(ii) The trader buys if there is no major defect (good or minor defect):
- 1 mark
(iii)(A)
- 1 mark
(iii)(A)
- 1 mark
(iii)(B) Neither buys only if the T-shirt has a major defect. Favourable outcomes .
- 1 mark
(iii)(B)
Answer: (i) 39/50; (ii) 183/200; (iii)(A) 11/50; (iii)(B) 17/200
Where the marks are
- (i) P(Harish buys) = 312/400 = 39/50 (1 mark)
- (ii) P(trader buys) = 366/400 = 183/200 (1 mark)
- (iii)(A) Uses the complement 1 − 312/400 (1 mark); gets 88/400 = 11/50 (1 mark)
- (iii)(B) Identifies 34 T-shirts with major defect (1 mark); probability 34/400 = 17/200 (1 mark)
