CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic sample paper 2026-27: question 20
From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2026-27, section A, question 20, for 1 mark. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q20 · 1 mark · Assertion-reasonCompetency-basedTriangles
Directions: Two statements are given, one labelled Assertion (A) and the other labelled Reason (R). Select the correct answer from the options given below.
ASSERTION (A): If a line divides any two sides of a triangle in the same ratio, then the line is parallel to the third side.
REASON (R): Line drawn from midpoint of one side of triangle parallel to another will bisect the third side.
- (A)Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of Assertion (A).
- (B)Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true but (R) is not the correct explanation of Assertion (A).
- (C)Assertion (A) is true but Reason (R) is false.
- (D)Assertion (A) is false but Reason (R) is true.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
A is the converse of which theorem?
Hint 2
Ask whether R actually justifies A or is a separate fact.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
A is the converse of the Basic Proportionality Theorem, so it is true. R is the mid-point theorem result, also true.
- 1 mark
R deals with a special case about bisecting a side; it does not explain the general converse of BPT. Option (B).
Answer: Option (B)
Where the marks are
- Recognises both statements as true and R as not explaining A (1 mark)
