CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2025: question 33(a)
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 430/6/1, section D, question 33(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q33(a) · 5 marks · Long answerCircles
Answer the following.
- (a)0 marks
The given figure shows a circle with centre O and radius 4 cm circumscribed by ABC. BC touches the circle at D such that BD = 6 cm and DC = 10 cm. Find the length of AE.
- (b)0 marks
PA and PB are tangents drawn to a circle with centre O. If AOB = and OA = 10 cm, then:

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Tangents from the same external point are equal — mark AE = AF = x and fill in the other tangent lengths.
Hint 2
Find the area of △ABC in two ways: Heron's formula, and as the sum of triangles OAB, OBC, OCA whose heights are the radius.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Let cm. Tangents drawn from an external point to a circle are equal, so , cm, cm.
Hence , , . - ½ mark
Semi-perimeter .
- 1 mark
By Heron's formula, …(i)
- 1 mark
Also, joining O to A, B, C (OD ⟂ BC, OE ⟂ CA, OF ⟂ AB, radius 4 cm) [tangent ⟂ radius]:
…(ii) - 1½ marks
Equating (i) and (ii) and squaring: .
Since ( is rejected), .So cm cm.
Answer: cm ≈ 5.8 cm
Where the marks are
- Uses equal tangents to write AF = AE = x, CE = 10, BF = 6 (1 mark)
- Semi-perimeter (½ mark)
- Area by Heron's formula (1 mark)
- Area as sum of three triangles (1 mark)
- Equates and solves to get cm (1½ marks)
