Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Probability = favourable outcomes ÷ 120.

Hint 2

Two-digit numbers run from 10 to 99; for squares, list until you pass 120.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Total outcomes = 120. Two-digit numbers are 10, 11, …, 99, so their count is .

    .

    1 mark
  2. (ii) Perfect squares from 1 to 120 are 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, i.e. 10 numbers ().

    .

    1 mark

Answer: (i) ; (ii)

Where the marks are

  • Counts 90 two-digit numbers and gets probability (1 mark)
  • Counts 10 perfect squares and gets probability (1 mark)
