CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2025: question 35(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 430/2/1, section D, question 35(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q35(a) · 5 marks · Long answerStatistics

The lengths of 40 leaves of a plant are measured, correct to the nearest millimetre and data obtained is represented in the following table: Length in (mm) 100-120: 8; 120-140: 9; 140-160: 12; 160-180: 5; 180-200: 6. Find the median length (in mm) of the leaves.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Build a cumulative frequency column and find N/2.

Hint 2

The median class is the first class whose cumulative frequency exceeds N/2.

Hint 3

Use Median = l + ((N/2 − cf)/f) × h with cf of the class before.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Cumulative frequency table: 100–120: f = 8, cf = 8; 120–140: f = 9, cf = 17; 140–160: f = 12, cf = 29; 160–180: f = 5, cf = 34; 180–200: f = 6, cf = 40. .

    2 marks
  2. , which lies in cf 29, so median class is 140–160: . Median .

    2 marks
  3. . The median length of the leaves is 145 mm.

    1 mark

Answer: Median length = 145 mm

Where the marks are

  • Correct cumulative frequency table (2 marks)
  • Identifies median class and substitutes in the median formula (2 marks)
  • Median = 145 mm (1 mark)
