CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2025: question 33(a)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2025, paper 30/6/1, section D, question 33(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q33(a) · 5 marks · Long answerTriangles

If a line drawn parallel to one side of triangle intersecting the other two sides in distinct points divides the two sides in the same ratio, then it is parallel to third side. State and prove the converse of the above statement.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

The converse swaps hypothesis and conclusion: start from 'DE ∥ BC'.

Hint 2

Join BE and CD and compare areas of triangles with a common height; triangles on the same base between the same parallels have equal area.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Statement (Basic Proportionality Theorem): If a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle to intersect the other two sides in distinct points, then the other two sides are divided in the same ratio.

  2. Given: in which line meets AB at D and AC at E. To prove: . Construction: Join BE and CD; draw and . Figure: triangle ABC with DE parallel to BC, BE, CD, EN, DM drawn.

Answer: Converse = Basic Proportionality Theorem: a line parallel to one side divides the other two sides in the same ratio (proved by area method)
