Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Tangents from a point outside a circle to it are equal in length.
Hint 2
Add the four tangent equalities, then use opposite sides of a rectangle are equal.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- ½ mark
Figure: rectangle ABCD with a circle (centre O, radius 10 cm) touching AB at P, BC at Q, CD at R and DA at S.
- 1 mark
Tangents drawn from an external point are equal: , , , .
- ½ mark
Adding: ...(i)
- ½ mark
In rectangle ABCD, and , so (i) gives . A rectangle with adjacent sides equal is a square, so ABCD is a square.
- ½ mark
Side of square = distance between opposite tangent points = diameter cm. Perimeter cm.
Answer: ABCD is a square; perimeter = 80 cm
Where the marks are
- Correct figure (½ mark)
- Equal tangent lengths from each vertex (1 mark)
- Adds to get (½ mark)
- Uses rectangle property to get , hence square (½ mark)
- Side = 20 cm, perimeter = 80 cm (½ mark)
