Q35 · 5 marks · Long answerSurface Areas and Volumes
A vessel is in the form of an inverted cone. Its height is 8 cm and the radius of its top, which is open, is 5 cm. It is filled with water up to the brim. When lead shots, each of which is a sphere of radius cm, are dropped into the vessel, one-fourth of the water flows out. Find the number of lead shots dropped in the vessel.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The water that flows out takes up exactly the same space as the lead shots.
Hint 2
Find the cone's volume, take one-fourth of it, then divide by the volume of one sphere of radius 0.5 cm.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Cone: cm, cm. Volume of water in the full cone
- ½ mark
cm
- 1 mark
The water that flows out equals the total volume of the lead shots dropped in. Volume of water that flows out cm
- 1 mark
Radius of one lead shot cm. Volume of one shot
- ½ mark
cm
- 1 mark
Number of lead shots
Answer: 100 lead shots
Where the marks are
- Writes the volume of the cone as (1 mark)
- Evaluates it as cm (½ mark)
- Finds the water displaced as cm (1 mark)
- Writes the volume of one shot as (1 mark)
- Evaluates it as cm (½ mark)
- Divides the two volumes to get 100 shots (1 mark)
