CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2024: question 27

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2024, paper 430/3/1, section C, question 27, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q27 · 3 marks · Short answerQuadratic Equations

The altitude of a right-angled triangle is cm less than its base. If its hypotenuse is cm long, then

  1. (a)

    represent the above information in the form of a quadratic equation;

    1 mark
  2. (b)

find the length of the sides of the triangle.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Let the base be ; write the altitude in terms of .

Hint 2

Use (hypotenuse) = (base) + (altitude) and simplify.

Hint 3

Split into two terms whose product is .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Let the base be cm; then the altitude is cm. By Pythagoras theorem:

    ½ mark
  2. (a) , the required quadratic equation.

    ½ mark
  3. (b) or

    ½ mark
  4. (b) Length cannot be negative, so ; hence .

    ½ mark
  5. (b) Base = 15 cm, altitude = cm, hypotenuse = 17 cm.

    1 mark

Answer: (a) ; (b) sides 15 cm, 8 cm and 17 cm

Where the marks are

  • Takes base and altitude and applies Pythagoras theorem (½ mark)
  • Obtains (½ mark)
  • Factorises as (½ mark)
  • Rejects negative root, (½ mark)
  • States the sides 15 cm and 8 cm (with hypotenuse 17 cm) (1 mark)
