Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

A segment is the region between a chord and its arc. How can you get it from a sector and a triangle?

Hint 2

Minor segment = sector area − area of the triangle formed by the two radii. With a 90° angle, that triangle is right-angled.

Hint 3

For the major segment, subtract the minor segment from the area of the whole circle.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Here cm and . Area of minor sector .

    1 mark
  2. The chord and the two radii form a right triangle at the centre, since . Its area .

    1 mark
  3. Area of minor segment area of sector area of triangle .

    1½ marks
  4. Area of major segment area of circle area of minor segment .

    1½ marks

Answer: Minor segment = 56 cm²; major segment = 560 cm²

Where the marks are

  • Area of sector (1 mark)
  • Area of triangle (1 mark)
  • Minor segment cm² (1½ marks)
  • Major segment cm² (1½ marks)
