Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Draw the building and the tower as one vertical line. Mark the height of the building as 20 m and the height of the tower as h.

Hint 2

Use tan in both right triangles. They share the same horizontal distance x.

Hint 3

The 45° angle gives x directly. Then use .

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: Let be the point on the ground and the foot of the building. Let m be the building and m the tower on top of it. Let m. Then , and .

    1 mark
  2. In right : , so .

    1 mark
  3. Therefore m ...(i)

    ½ mark
  4. In right : , so .

    1 mark
  5. Therefore ...(ii)

    ½ mark
  6. Substitute (i) in (ii): , so m m.

Hence the height of the tower is m.

    1 mark

Answer: Height of tower m m
