Q33(a) · 5 marks · Long answerCompetency-basedSome Applications of Trigonometry

The angle of elevation of the top of a tower 24 m high from the foot of another tower in the same plane is . The angle of elevation of the top of second tower from the foot of the first tower is . Find the distance between two towers and the height of the other tower. Also, find the length of the wire attached to the tops of both the towers.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Draw both towers on the same ground line. The 60° angle is at the foot of the second tower, looking up at the 24 m tower.

Hint 2

Use with the 24 m tower to find the gap, then to find the second tower's height.

Hint 3

For the wire, use Pythagoras: the vertical difference is and the horizontal distance is the gap.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: Let be the first tower with m (foot A, top B). Let be the second tower (foot C, top D). Let be the distance between the towers.

    • (elevation of B from C)
    • (elevation of D from A)

Draw (E on AB), so and .

  3. In right : ...(ii)

    1 mark
  4. From (i) and (ii): the distance between the towers is m (≈ 13.86 m).

The height of the other tower is m.

  5. The wire joins tops B and D. In right :

    • m
    • m

    m (≈ 21.17 m).

Answer: Distance m; height of other tower = 8 m; wire m
