CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Basic 2023: question 34

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 430/2/1, section D, question 34, for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q34 · 5 marks · Long answerTriangles

If a line is drawn parallel to one side of a triangle to intersect the other two sides in distinct points, then prove that the other two sides are divided in the same ratio.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Compare areas of triangles instead of comparing lengths directly.

Hint 2

Join BE and CD. Drop perpendiculars from E to AB and from D to AC, and write ratios of areas.

Hint 3

Triangles BDE and DEC share base DE and lie between the parallels DE and BC, so their areas are equal.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: Draw . Take a line parallel to that meets at and at . Join and . Draw (N on AB) and (M on AC).

    ½ mark
  2. Given: In , , with meeting at and at .

    ½ mark
  3. To prove:

    ½ mark
  4. Construction: Join and . Draw and .

    ½ mark
  5. Proof: Use area base height.

In and , the height from is for both:

    ... (1)

    1 mark
  6. In and , the height from is for both:

    ... (2)

    1 mark
  7. and have the same base and lie between the same parallels and . So ... (3)

    From (1), (2) and (3): . Hence proved.

    1 mark

Answer: Proved: if DE ∥ BC in △ABC, then AD/DB = AE/EC (Basic Proportionality Theorem).

Where the marks are

  • Draws a correct labelled figure (½ mark)
  • States what is given (½ mark)
  • States what is to be proved (½ mark)
  • States the construction: join BE and CD, draw EN ⊥ AB and DM ⊥ AC (½ mark)
  • Expresses as (1 mark)
  • Expresses as (1 mark)
  • Uses equal areas of triangles on the same base between the same parallels to conclude (1 mark)
