Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

This is the Basic Proportionality (Thales) Theorem. Write Given, To Prove, Construction and Proof.

Hint 2

Join BE and CD, and compare areas of triangles that share the same height.

Hint 3

Triangles BDE and DEC are on the same base DE and between the same parallels.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Given: In , a line parallel to meets at and at , so .

    To prove: .

    1 mark
  2. Figure and construction: Draw with , where is on and is on . Join and . Draw (N on AB) and (M on AC).

    1 mark
  3. Proof: Using area base height:

    • and
    • So ...(1)

    Similarly:

    • and
    • So ...(2)
    1 mark
  4. and stand on the same base and lie between the same parallels and .

    So ...(3)

    1 mark
  5. From (1), (2) and (3): .

Hence the other two sides are divided in the same ratio. Hence proved.

    1 mark

Answer: (Basic Proportionality Theorem proved)

Where the marks are

  • Correct Given and To Prove (1 mark)
  • Correct figure and construction: join BE and CD, draw perpendiculars (1 mark)
  • Area ratios and (1 mark)
  • : same base, between same parallels (1 mark)
  • Concludes (1 mark)
