CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2023: question 28(b)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 30/5/1, section C, question 28(b), for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q28(b) · 3 marks · Short answerTriangles

In the given figure, ABCD is a parallelogram. BE bisects CD at M and intersects AC at L. Prove that .

Figure in the paper: Parallelogram ABCD with A bottom-left, B bottom-right, C top-right, D top-left. E is a point above D, with line ED extended from A side; segment EB passes through M (midpoint of DC) and L (on diagonal AC). Diagonal AC drawn. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

AE lies along AD, which is parallel to BC; DC is parallel to AB. Look for alternate angles at the diagonal AC.

Hint 2

Find two pairs of similar triangles meeting at L that both give the ratio AL/CL.

Hint 3

M is the midpoint of CD, so CD = 2CM.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. E lies on AD produced, and , so . In and : (alternate angles) and (vertically opposite). So (AA).
    ……(i)

    1 mark
  2. Also . In and : (alternate angles) and (vertically opposite). So (AA).

    1 mark
  3. Opposite sides of a parallelogram are equal, so : ……(ii)

    ½ mark
  4. From (i) and (ii): [M is the midpoint of CD]. . Hence proved.

    ½ mark

Answer: Using ΔALE ~ ΔCLB and ΔCLM ~ ΔALB with AB = CD = 2CM, EL = 2BL (proved).

Where the marks are

  • Proves ΔALE ~ ΔCLB and writes AL/CL = EL/BL (1 mark)
  • Proves ΔCLM ~ ΔALB and writes AL/CL = AB/CM (1 mark)
  • Uses AB = CD to get AL/CL = CD/CM (½ mark)
  • Uses CD = 2CM to conclude EL = 2BL (½ mark)
