CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2023: question 34
Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 30/4/1, section D, question 34, for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q34 · 5 marks · Long answerSurface Areas and Volumes
A student was asked to make a model shaped like a cylinder with two cones attached to its ends by using a thin aluminium sheet. The diameter of the model is 3 cm and its total length is 12 cm. If each cone has a height of 2 cm, find the volume of air contained in the model.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
The air fills the whole model: one cylinder plus two cones.
Hint 2
The cylinder's length is the total length minus the heights of both cones.
Hint 3
Use with cm.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Radius of the cylinder = radius of each cone: cm.
Height of each cone: cm.
Height of the cylinder: cm.
- 1½ marks
Volume of air = volume of cylinder + volume of 2 cones
- 1½ marks
Substitute the values:
- 1 mark
So the volume of air in the model is .
Answer:
Where the marks are
- Finds cm and cylinder height cm (1 mark)
- Writes volume = cylinder + 2 cones (1½ marks)
- Substitutes the values correctly (1½ marks)
- Gets (1 mark)
