CBSE Class 10 Mathematics Standard 2023: question 35(b)

Set in the CBSE Class 10 board exam of 2023, paper 30/2/1, section D, question 35(b), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q35(b) · 5 marks · Long answerTriangles

Through the mid-point M of the side CD of a parallelogram ABCD, the line BM is drawn intersecting AC in L and AD (produced) in E. Prove that .

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Since AD is produced to E, the line AE is parallel to BC. Which angle pairs does that give you?

Hint 2

M is the mid-point of CD. Try proving that the two triangles meeting at M are congruent, and see what this tells you about DE.

Hint 3

Show that AE = 2BC, then find two similar triangles that both have their vertex at L.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Figure: Draw parallelogram ABCD with M the mid-point of CD. Join BM and extend it to meet AD produced at E. Draw diagonal AC, which cuts BE at L.

    1 mark
  2. In and :
[M is the mid-point of CD]
    [vertically opposite angles]
    [alternate angles, since ]
    So [AAS], and therefore [CPCT].

    1 mark
  3. Opposite sides of a parallelogram are equal, so . Hence , which gives .

    1 mark
  4. In and :
    [alternate angles, ]
    [vertically opposite angles]
    So [AA similarity].

    ½ mark
  5. Corresponding sides are proportional: .

    ½ mark
  6. So , i.e. . Hence proved.

    1 mark

Answer: gives ; then gives , i.e. .

Where the marks are

  • Correct labelled figure (1 mark)
  • Proves and gets (1 mark)
  • Uses to obtain (1 mark)
  • Proves (½ mark)
  • Writes the ratio (½ mark)
  • Concludes (1 mark)
