Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
If a number leaves remainder 1 on dividing 85, what does it divide exactly?
Hint 2
Subtract each remainder from its number, then find the greatest common divisor of the two results.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
The required number leaves remainder 1 when it divides 85, so it divides exactly. It leaves remainder 2 when it divides 72, so it divides exactly. Hence the required number is the HCF of 84 and 70.
- 1 mark
Write the prime factorisations: and .
So HCF .
The greatest such number is 14.
Answer: 14
Where the marks are
- Reduces the problem to the HCF of 84 and 70 (1 mark)
- Finds HCF = 14 (1 mark)
