Q25(b) · 2 marks · Very short answerAreas Related to Circles

Find the area of the unshaded region shown in the given figure.

Figure in the paper: A square of side 14 cm. Inside it is a cloverleaf-shaped unshaded figure made of four semicircular-type bulges, each marked 3 cm from the nearest side of the square (3 cm from the top, bottom, left and right sides). The rest of the square is shaded. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Split the unshaded figure into a central square and four semicircles.

Hint 2

Width of the unshaded region = 14 − 3 − 3. This width equals radius + side + radius.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The unshaded region is a square of side in the centre. On each of its four sides stands a semicircle of diameter .

    ½ mark
  2. Across the square, the unshaded region leaves a 3 cm gap on each side. So its full width is cm.

    ½ mark
  3. This width is made of a radius, the side of the square and another radius:

So the radius of each semicircle is cm.

    ½ mark

  4. With , this is .

    ½ mark

Answer: cm² ≈ 41.14 cm²

Where the marks are

  • Identifies the region as a square plus four semicircles with diameter equal to the side of the square (1/2 mark)
  • Finds the width of the unshaded region as 14 − 3 − 3 = 8 cm (1/2 mark)
  • Gets the side of the square a = 4 cm (1/2 mark)
  • Gets the area (16 + 8π) cm² (1/2 mark)
