CASE STUDY 1
India is competitive manufacturing location due to the low cost of manpower and strong technical and engineering capabilities contributing to higher quality production runs. The production of TV sets in a factory increases uniformly by a fixed number every year. It produced 16000 sets in 6th year and 22600 in 9th year.
- 1)1 mark
In which year, the production is 29,200 sets?
- 2)1 mark
Find the production in the 8th year.
- 2)1 mark
Find the production in first 3 years.
- 3)2 marks
Find the difference of the production in 7th year and 4th year.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Equal yearly increases mean the productions form an AP; write the 6th and 9th terms using .
Hint 2
Subtract the two equations to find , then find .
Hint 3
For the first 3 years use ; for the difference of the 7th and 4th terms, remember it equals .
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
Since production increases by a fixed number every year, the yearly productions form an AP with first term and common difference . Given and :
...(1)
...(2)Subtracting (1) from (2): . Then .
- ½ mark
1) Let the production be 29200 in the th year. Using :
- ½ mark
.
The production is 29,200 sets in the 12th year. - ½ mark
2) Production in the 8th year:
- ½ mark
. The production in the 8th year is 20,400 sets.
- ½ mark
2) (OR) Production in the first 3 years:
- ½ mark
. The production in the first 3 years is 21,600 sets.
- ½ mark
3)
- ½ mark
- 1 mark
Difference: sets. (Check: .)
Answer: 1) 12th year; 2) 20,400 sets (OR first 3 years: 21,600 sets); 3) 6,600 sets
Where the marks are
- Sets up , and gets , (needed to start)
- Writes (½ mark)
- Gets , i.e. the 12th year (½ mark)
- Writes (½ mark)
- Gets 20400 sets (½ mark)
- OR: uses (½ mark) and gets 21600 sets (½ mark)
- Finds (½ mark) and (½ mark)
- States the difference as 6600 sets (1 mark)
