Q4(b) · 5 marks · WritingCompetency-basedWriting Skills

You are Shereen / Shivaji. There has been a lot of construction going on in your colony since the past few months. However the contractors do not follow any protocols of timings, blocking pavements with building material and dumping the rubble in the back lanes and sewage pipes. Write a letter to the President of your RWA drawing attention to these issues. Suggest a set of protocols to be followed by the builders to reduce any inconvenience being caused to the neighbouring residents.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Use the formal letter format, addressed to the RWA President.

Hint 2

List the problems first: timings, blocked pavements, rubble dumping.

Hint 3

Then give a set of protocols the builders should follow.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Format: sender's address, date, the President, RWA with address, subject 'Inconvenience caused by construction work in the colony', salutation 'Sir', close 'Yours faithfully' with name.

    1 mark
  2. Problems: 'For the past few months construction has continued at irregular and extended hours, causing persistent noise. Pavements are blocked with sand, bricks and iron rods, which is a safety hazard for residents, especially children and the elderly. Rubble is dumped in the back lanes and sewage pipes, causing blockages.'

    1 mark
  3. Suggestions: 'Fix working hours for construction, store materials within the site, dispose of debris properly, and impose fines for non-compliance.'

    1 mark
  4. Organisation: paragraphed, formal tone, a request for early action.

    1 mark
  5. Accuracy of spelling, grammar and punctuation.

    1 mark

Answer: A formal letter to the RWA President of about 120 words, as modelled above.
