Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. I. The poem identifies each animal by a distinctive trait linked to its nature. The bear is known for its 'hug', the crocodile for its 'tears' and the leopard for its spots. Appearance thus reveals behaviour, so the animals can be recognised and avoided.

    3 marks
  2. II. Rajvir was visiting Assam for the first time and was awed by the beauty of the tea plantation seen from the train. Pranjol was a native and used to such sights, so he was calm and unexcited.

    3 marks
  3. III. The hemlock tree and the crow are traditional symbols of gloom, sorrow and death. Frost reverses them: the crow shakes snow down on the speaker. This shows the healing power of nature, which turns a sad mood into joy.

    3 marks
  4. IV. A hailstorm destroyed the ripe cornfield and left it looking as if covered with salt. Lencho had firm faith in God, so he wrote a letter asking Him for a hundred pesos to recover his losses.

    3 marks
  5. V. Lomov and Natalya quarrel over Oxen Meadows and then over their dogs, trading insults and false claims. No result is reached and the proposal is jeopardised. Lomov's palpitations and fainting show the harm done by such disputes.
