Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (I) 'The Necklace': Matilda's longing for wealth makes her borrow a diamond necklace from Madame Forestier to shine at the ball. When she loses it, she and her husband take on heavy debt to replace it. Ten years of hardship follow, so her desire drives the whole plot.

    3 marks
  2. (II) Ebright: His early wins at science fairs gave him confidence and validation of his talent. They motivated him and opened opportunities, strengthening his passion and competitive spirit. This encouraged him to keep working harder, which shaped his path to becoming a successful scientist.

    3 marks
  3. (III) 'The Book that Saved the Earth': The play shows Martians as arrogant, superior beings who misunderstand basic Earth things like a book, which is humorous satire on human behaviour. It has a futuristic setting with space travel and spaceships, which gives it a science-fiction element. Exaggerated scenes and absurd situations add to the comic criticism.
