Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Start with the formal layout: addresses, date, subject line.

Hint 2

Say what disturbed you, then give two or three practical suggestions.

Hint 3

End with a polite appeal and 'Yours truly'.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Format: sender's address (E-46, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi), date, receiver's address (The Editor, The Hindustan Times, New Delhi), subject, salutation 'Sir/Madam', and ending 'Yours truly, Mohit'.

    1 mark
  2. Content: Recent news articles on neglect of elders disturbed me. Many elders live in loneliness, ignored by busy families. Children must be sensitised to their plight, taught to care, share and spend time with grandparents. Schools and parents should encourage visits to old-age homes and storytelling sessions. Strong family values, shared meals and respect for elders can end this neglect.

    2 marks
  3. Organisation: formal tone, clear paragraphs, logical order from concern to suggestion to appeal, in 100–120 words.

    1 mark
  4. Accuracy: correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.
