Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (i) Mrs Pumphrey cannot say no to her dog Tricki and overfeeds him with sweets and rich food, so he becomes dangerously fat and ill. She also ignores Herriot's advice at first. Only when Herriot firmly puts Tricki on a strict diet and exercise does he recover. The story shows that saying no is sometimes the best way to care for someone.

  2. (ii) Education transforms Bholi from a timid, stammering girl into a confident woman. Her teacher's kindness gives her self-esteem and a voice. She learns to stand up for herself and refuses to marry the greedy Bishamber. She chooses to teach in the village school, challenging social norms.

  3. (iii) Arthur builds suspense through dialogue. The talk between Ausable and Max is full of half-truths and teasing hints, so the reader is unsure of Max's real intentions and Ausable's role. This ambiguity keeps the tension high until the twist, when Ausable's trick is revealed and the mystery resolves.
