Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Kisa Gotami was grief-stricken at her only son's death and could not accept it. She carried the dead child from door to door, asking the neighbours for medicine to revive him. At last she went to the Buddha and begged him to bring her child back to life.

  2. (b) The raindrops are compared to coins: the big drops to ten-cent coins and the small ones to five-cent coins. Lencho compares them so because he hopes that the rain will ripen his crop and bring him a good harvest and money.

  3. (c) The Goan baker remains important because no celebration is possible without his bread. Weddings, feasts and Christmas need his sweet bread, bol, cakes and bolinhas. Even a mother must order sandwiches for her daughter's engagement. His daily bread is a part of everyday village life.

  4. (d) Chubukov was overjoyed when Lomov asked for Natalya's hand. He accepted the proposal happily, embraced and kissed Lomov, and said that he had always loved him like a son. He also wished them happiness and was eager for the marriage.

  5. (e) Amanda is fed up with her parents' constant nagging and orders. She wants to be alone and free of them. As a mermaid she would be the sole occupant of the sea, with no one to scold her, living happily and freely.
