Ocean Floor Relief and the Three Oceans (ISC Class 11 Geography)
Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked
The ocean floor has a continental shelf (to about 200 m), slope (to about 3,000 m), deep-sea plain (about 3,000 to 6,000 m) and trenches, plus ridges, seamounts, guyots, canyons and atolls. The Pacific has the Mariana Trench, the Atlantic the S-shaped Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and the Indian Ocean an inverted-Y ridge and the Ninety East Ridge.
Understand Ocean Floor Relief and the Three Oceans
Major divisions. Continental shelf: gentle (about 1 degree or less), ends near 200 m at the shelf break, average width about 80 km (from almost nothing off Chile to over 1,000 km in the Siberian Arctic); rich in fisheries and oil (Grand Banks, Dogger Bank, Bombay High). Continental slope: about 2 to 5 degrees down to about 3,000 m, cut by submarine canyons, with a continental rise at its foot. Deep-sea (abyssal) plain: very flat at about 3,000 to 6,000 m. Oceanic deeps (trenches): narrow, steep depressions mostly along plate margins, with island arcs and earthquakes; most are in the Pacific.
Minor features. Mid-oceanic ridges (central rift, new crust), seamounts, guyots (flat-topped), submarine canyons (Hudson Canyon), atolls (Lakshadweep, Maldives).
Pacific. Largest and deepest, about one-third of earth's surface, average depth over 4,000 m; narrow shelves along the Americas, wide in the west; most trenches: Mariana (Challenger Deep, close to 11,000 m), Tonga, Kermadec, Kuril, Japan, Philippine, Aleutian and Peru-Chile; the East Pacific Rise; Hawaiian-Emperor chain.
Atlantic. S-shaped, average depth about 3,300 to 3,600 m; Mid-Atlantic Ridge from Iceland to near the Southern Ocean, with islands such as Iceland, Azores, Ascension, St Helena and Tristan da Cunha; wide shelves off north-western Europe, Newfoundland and Argentina; Puerto Rico Trench (about 8,400 m) the deepest.
Indian. Third largest, average depth about 3,800 to 4,000 m; inverted-Y Mid-Indian Ocean Ridge with the Carlsberg Ridge, South-West and South-East Indian Ridges; Ninety East Ridge along about 90 degrees E; Java (Sunda) Trench over 7,000 m; islands: Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Reunion, Lakshadweep, Maldives, Chagos.

How to answer Ocean Floor Relief and the Three Oceans questions
Questions are 4 marks: relief divisions or relief of one ocean; sums use echo sounding and gradient.
- 1List the four divisions with depth and slope.
- 2For an ocean give size, depth, ridge, trench and shelves.
- 3Name islands on ridges.
- 4For sums, convert km to m and write the unit.
Ocean Floor Relief and the Three Oceans in real life
The idea, met in an everyday situation. Answer the question in your own words, then compare with the model answer. The one-line hook is what to remember.
Echo time
Suppose a ship sends a sound pulse that returns after 8 seconds, with sound travelling at 1,500 m/s.
Find the depth.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Distance travelled = 1,500 x 8 = 12,000 m.
- Depth = 12,000/2 = 6,000 m.
Answer: 6,000 m.
Memory hook: Half the round trip.
Slope gradient
Suppose the sea floor drops from 200 m to 3,000 m over 56 km.
Find the gradient as 1 in n and in degrees.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Drop = 2,800 m; distance = 56,000 m.
- Gradient = 2,800/56,000 = 1 in 20; angle about 2.86 degrees.
Answer: 1 in 20, about 2.9 degrees.
Memory hook: Drop over distance.

Example 1: Deepest · 1 mark · MCQBoard level
The deepest known point is in the:
(a) Puerto Rico Trench
(b) Java Trench
(c) Mariana Trench
(d) Peru-Chile Trench
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Challenger Deep.
Answer: (c) Mariana Trench.
Example 2: Shelf facts · 3 marks · Short answerBoard level
State the usual depth limit, average width and one economic use of the continental shelf.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Ends at about 200 m at the shelf break.
- Average width about 80 km.
- Fishing grounds or oil and gas (Bombay High).
Answer: About 200 m; about 80 km; fishing and oil.
Example 3: Echo sounding · 4 marks · Long answerHarder board level
A ship receives an echo after 6.4 s and another after 3.2 s. Taking 1,500 m/s, find both depths. State which depth fits the continental slope and which the deep-sea plain.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Depth 1 = 1,500 x 6.4/2 = 4,800 m.
- Depth 2 = 1,500 x 3.2/2 = 2,400 m.
- 4,800 m fits the deep-sea plain range (3,000-6,000 m).
- 2,400 m fits the continental slope (200-3,000 m), not the shelf.
Answer: 4,800 m (deep-sea plain); 2,400 m (continental slope).

Where students lose marks in Ocean Floor Relief and the Three Oceans
The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.
Mistake: Not halving the echo time
Round trip used as depth.
Wrong working
1,500 x 8 = 12,000 m depth
Right working
1,500 x 8 / 2 = 6,000 m
Do this: Depth = speed x time / 2.
Usually costs: 2 marks.
Mistake: Calling the Mariana Trench Atlantic
Ocean misassigned.
Do this: Mariana is in the Pacific.
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Mistake: Shelf gradient too steep
Shelf and slope confused.
Do this: Shelf is about 1 degree; slope 2 to 5 degrees.
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Exam tips
- Give depths for each division.
- Associate trenches with island arcs and earthquakes.
- Write echo sounding formula with halving.
- Name one ridge and one trench per ocean.
