Water Bodies, Rivers, Ocean Currents and Islands (ISC Class 11 Geography Map Work)
Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked
Map work covers five oceans, 15 seas, bays and gulfs, a canal and a strait to mark and label, and 20 rivers, 10 ocean currents and 14 islands to identify. Identify by continent, direction of flow or movement, and mouth or neighbour; mark warm currents with firm or red arrows and cold currents with broken or blue arrows with a key.
Understand Water Bodies, Rivers, Ocean Currents and Islands
Water bodies. Oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Southern. Seas, bays, gulfs: Hudson Bay, Gulf of Mexico, Bering Sea, Sea of Japan, Yellow Sea, South China Sea, Timor Sea, Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Mediterranean, Black Sea, Caspian Sea (largest inland water body) and North Sea. Suez Canal (Egypt, Port Said to Gulf of Suez, separating Africa from Asia); Strait of Magellan (southern tip of South America, linking the Atlantic and Pacific).
Rivers. Mississippi (USA to the Gulf of Mexico); Amazon (east across northern Brazil near the equator); Parana (to Rio de la Plata); Nile (north into the Mediterranean); Zaire (Congo; crosses the equator twice); Orange (west into the Atlantic); Rhine (Alps to the North Sea); Danube (east to the Black Sea); Volga (south to the Caspian); Tigris and Euphrates (Turkey to the Persian Gulf); Ob, Yenisei, Lena (west to east, to the Arctic); Hwang Ho; Yangtze; Irrawaddy; Ganga; Murray and Darling.
Currents. Warm: Gulf Stream, North Atlantic Drift, South-West Monsoon current, East Australian, Kuroshio. Cold: Labrador, Peru (Humboldt), West Wind Drift, West Australian, Oyashio.
Islands. Greenland, Baffin, Newfoundland, Iceland, West Indies, Hawaii, Tierra del Fuego, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Japan, New Zealand.
Method. To identify, note continent, direction and mouth; to mark, place by latitude zone, coast and neighbours; show currents with arrows and a key.

How to answer Water Bodies, Rivers, Ocean Currents and Islands questions
Identification questions give a letter on a map; mark-and-label questions give a blank outline.
- 1Read the continent and coast from the map.
- 2For rivers note direction of flow and mouth.
- 3For currents use warm or cold based on origin and the coast.
- 4Write the name neatly beside the letter or feature.
Water Bodies, Rivers, Ocean Currents and Islands in real life
The idea, met in an everyday situation. Answer the question in your own words, then compare with the model answer. The one-line hook is what to remember.
Which river?
Suppose a river on a map flows north through Sudan and Egypt into the Mediterranean.
Name it.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- A north-flowing African river into the Mediterranean is the Nile.
- It is the longest river.
Answer: The Nile.
Memory hook: North through Egypt.
Ship time
Suppose a ship travelling 20 km/h avoids a 1,800 km detour via a canal route.
How long does the detour take?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Time = 1,800 / 20 = 90 hours.
- That is 3.75 days.
Answer: 90 hours.
Memory hook: Distance over speed.
Tricks to remember Water Bodies, Rivers, Ocean Currents and Islands
Short memory aids. Say each one aloud once, then use it on a question the same day.
Ob Yenisei Lena
OYL from west to east into the Arctic.
Use it when: Siberian rivers.
Warm from equator
Currents from the equator are warm; from the poles cold.
Use it when: Currents.

Where students lose marks in Water Bodies, Rivers, Ocean Currents and Islands
The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.
Mistake: Marking a river without direction
Arrows or mouth wrong.
Do this: Show flow direction and the mouth.
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Mistake: Confusing Oyashio with Kuroshio
Warm and cold swapped.
Wrong working
Oyashio warm

Oyashio cold
Do this: Kuroshio warm; Oyashio cold.
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Mistake: Using non-syllabus items
Extra rivers or islands.
Do this: Mark only the list.
Usually costs: 1 mark.
Exam tips
- Learn currents with warm or cold labels.
- Note river mouths.
- Use a key for currents.
