Online Transactions, Payments, Blockchain and Security: ISC Class 11 Business Studies

Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked

An online transaction passes through registration and login, selecting goods and placing the order, payment, confirmation and delivery. Payment mechanisms include cash on delivery, cards, net banking, UPI, e-wallets and payment gateways. Blockchain is a shared, tamper-resistant digital ledger of linked blocks; crypto-assets are digital assets built on it. Security rests on passwords, encryption, firewalls, digital signatures and user caution.

Understand Online Transactions, Payment Mechanisms, Blockchain and Security

Steps of an online transaction. (1) Registration/log-in on the site or app. (2) Choosing items and adding to the cart. (3) Placing the order with address and details. (4) Making payment. (5) Order confirmation and invoice. (6) Dispatch, delivery and tracking. (7) After-sales service: returns, refund, feedback.

Payment mechanisms.

  • *Cash on delivery (COD):* payment when goods arrive; no online risk, but risk of refusal and cost of handling.
  • *Cards (debit/credit):* entered on a secure payment page; instant.
  • *Net banking:* direct transfer from the bank account via the bank's website.
  • *UPI and wallets:* mobile based, instant.
  • *Payment gateway:* a service between customer and merchant that securely passes payment data and confirms the payment.

Blockchain (meaning). A shared digital ledger in which records (transactions) are grouped in blocks; each block is linked to the previous one by a cryptographic code, so changing an old record would break the chain. It is kept by many computers, with no single owner, which makes tampering difficult.

Crypto-assets (meaning). Digital assets that use cryptography and blockchain and are not issued by a central bank. Their prices can swing sharply and they are not the legal tender; users should understand the risk and the rules before dealing in them. The digital rupee, by contrast, is central bank currency in digital form.

Security and safety.

  • *Encryption:* scrambling data so only the intended receiver can read it (shown as https and the padlock).
  • *Firewall:* blocks unauthorised access to a network.
  • *Digital signature and certificate:* prove the sender's identity and that the message is unchanged.
  • *Passwords, PIN, OTP, two-step verification.*
  • *Antivirus and updates; avoid public Wi-Fi for payments; check URLs.*

Risks. Phishing, fake sites, data breach, non-delivery, unauthorised payments.

Practice questions on Online Transactions, Payment Mechanisms, Blockchain and Security

Write each answer on paper first. Open the hint only if you are stuck, and the answer only when you have finished.

  1. Q1 · 1 mark · MCQBoard level

    A firewall is used to:
    (a) increase internet speed (b) block unauthorised access to a network (c) make payments (d) design a website

    Hint

    Wall against intrusion.

    Answer

    (b) block unauthorised access to a network

  2. Q2 · 3 marks · Short answerBoard level

What is a payment gateway? State its role in an online transaction. (3 marks)

    Hint

    Between customer and merchant.

    Answer

A payment gateway is a service that securely passes the customer's payment details to the bank and confirms the result to the merchant, completing the online payment.

  3. Q3 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level

Explain blockchain in simple terms and state two reasons it is considered difficult to tamper with. (4 marks)

    Hint

    Chain of blocks.

    Answer

Blockchain is a shared digital ledger in which transactions are grouped into blocks that are linked by cryptographic codes. Changing an old block breaks the chain, and the ledger is held by many computers rather than one authority.

  4. Q4 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level

A buyer purchases goods priced Rs 2,400 with 5% discount, delivery Rs 60 and a payment-gateway charge of 1.5% on the discounted price if a card is used. Find the amount payable by card and by COD (COD fee Rs 30). (4 marks)

    Hint

    Discounted price 2,280.

    Answer

    Discounted price = 2,400 - 120 = 2,280. Card: gateway charge = 34.20; total = 2,280 + 60 + 34.20 = Rs 2,374.20. COD: 2,280 + 60 + 30 = Rs 2,370.

  5. Q5 · 3 marks · Short answerHOTS / competency

A friend urges a classmate to put all her savings in a crypto-asset because "prices only go up". Evaluate with two facts from the meaning and risks of crypto-assets. (3 marks)

    Hint

    Volatility.

    Answer

Crypto-assets are not issued by a central bank, are not legal tender and can swing sharply in price, so putting all savings in them is risky. A sound plan spreads savings and uses regulated options.
