Area of a Circle and an Ellipse by Integration (Class 12)

Updated 15 October 2026 · Fact-checked

For the circle x² + y² = a², the upper half is y = √(a² − x²), so the area is 4∫₀ᵃ √(a² − x²) dx = πa². For the ellipse x²/a² + y²/b² = 1, y = (b/a)√(a² − x²) and the area is πab. Parts are found with the same integral and suitable limits.

Find the shaded quarter by integrating thin strips from 0 to a, then multiply by 4 to get πa² for the circle and πab for the ellipse.

Understand Area of Circle and Ellipse by Integration

Circles and ellipses in standard form are in the 2026-27 syllabus. The single integral that does all the work is
.
Over a full quarter it gives , because the first term vanishes at both ends and .

A circle is the special case .

Parts of a circle or ellipse. A vertical line cuts off a segment. Its area is for the circle (twice the part above the axis), and for the ellipse. A strip between and is similar. Values like give , which is why they are popular. For a horizontal line , use horizontal strips with .

Exam note: a standard curve cut by a slanting line. NCERT removed the separate section on regions between a curve and a line, but CBSE's sample papers still set simple cases (a circle cut by a line such as ). Find where they meet, then integrate (upper curve lower curve) between those x-values, or use geometry: segment sector triangle. Keep to a standard circle or ellipse and one straight line.

Sketching. Mark the intercepts and , draw the curve, draw the cutting line, and shade the region. Use symmetry wherever possible and say which symmetry you use.

This is NCERT Section 8.2; circle and ellipse areas appeared as 5-mark questions in the 2024, 2025 and 2026 board papers.

Area of Circle and Ellipse by Integration: frequently asked questions

How do I find the area of an ellipse using integration?

Solve the equation for y to get the upper half, y = (b/a)√(a² − x²). By symmetry, the area is 4 times the integral of this from 0 to a, which gives πab.

Why is the answer always a multiple of π for a full circle or ellipse?

Because the integral of √(a² − x²) from 0 to a involves sin inverse of 1, which is π/2. That is where π comes from.

Are regions between a circle and a line in the syllabus?

NCERT dropped the separate section on regions between a curve and a line, but CBSE sample papers still ask simple cases with a standard circle or ellipse and one straight line. Learn the method: find intersections, then integrate upper minus lower.

Which NCERT section covers these areas?

Section 8.2 (Area under Simple Curves) of Chapter 8, Application of Integrals, in NCERT Mathematics Part II for Class 12.

Do I need circles with centres away from the origin?

No. The 2026-27 syllabus limits circles, parabolas and ellipses to standard form.
