Area Involving a Parabola: y² = 4ax and x² = 4ay by Integration (Class 12)

Updated 15 October 2026 · Fact-checked

For the parabola y² = 4ax, the upper arm is y = 2√(ax), so the area between it, the x-axis and x = c is ∫₀ᶜ 2√(ax) dx; the whole region cut off by the line x = c is twice that. For x² = 4ay use horizontal strips, x = 2√(ay), or vertical strips with y = x²/(4a).

Understand Area Involving a Parabola

The standard parabolas in the syllabus are (opening right), (left), (up) and (down), all with vertex at the origin. Each is symmetric about its axis, which halves the work.

**Parabola opening right, .** It is symmetric about the x-axis; the upper arm is . The region bounded by the parabola and the line (the 'mouth' of the parabola cut off by a vertical chord) has area
.
Only the first-quadrant part is . Read the question carefully: 'in the first quadrant' halves the area.

**Parabola opening up, .** It is symmetric about the y-axis. Two natural set-ups:

  • the region under the curve from to : (vertical strips);
  • the region between the curve and a horizontal line : horizontal strips of length , so (or twice the first-quadrant part).

Choosing strips. Use the variable that gives a single formula across the region. A region against the y-axis (bounded by and ) usually needs horizontal strips. Integrals of or use the power rule: .

Archimedes' check. The region between a parabola and a chord perpendicular to its axis is of the enclosing rectangle. For cut by : rectangle , region . A fast way to check answers.

Exam note: a parabola cut by a slanting line. The separate NCERT section on a curve and a line was dropped, but CBSE sample papers still set such regions (for example a parabola and a line through the vertex). Solve the two equations together for the intersection points, then integrate (upper lower) between them. Keep to one standard parabola and one straight line.

Areas with parabolas appear as MCQs and as parts of 3- to 5-mark questions (NCERT Section 8.2).

How to solve Area Involving a Parabola questions

Use this routine for any area question with a standard parabola.

  1. 1Identify the parabola's direction and axis of symmetry; sketch it with any bounding lines and shade the region.
  2. 2Find intersection points of the parabola with the given lines (solve simultaneously).
  3. 3Choose vertical or horizontal strips so that each strip runs between the same two boundaries.
  4. 4Use symmetry (state it) to integrate over one half and double if appropriate.
  5. 5Integrate with the power rule, substitute limits, and check with Archimedes' rule where it applies.
  6. 6Write the answer in square units.

Exam tips

  • Parabola areas appeared as 1-mark MCQs (2024 board paper, 2025 sample paper) and in curve-and-line regions in the 2026 and 2027 sample papers; sketch every time.
  • State the symmetry you use, for example 'the region is symmetric about the x-axis'.
  • Check answers with Archimedes' rule when the chord is perpendicular to the axis.
  • For curve-and-line regions, the intersection points earn a mark on their own.
  • Keep answers as fractions such as unless decimals are asked.

Area Involving a Parabola: frequently asked questions

How do I find the area bounded by a parabola and a vertical line?

Write the upper arm of the parabola as a function, for example y = 2√(ax) for y² = 4ax, integrate it from the vertex to the line, and double it if the region is symmetric about the x-axis.

Is the area between a parabola and a slanting line in the syllabus?

NCERT dropped the separate section on regions between a curve and a line, but CBSE sample papers still include simple cases with a standard parabola and one line. Find the intersection points and integrate upper minus lower.

When should I use horizontal strips?

When the region is bounded by horizontal lines such as y = 1 and y = 4, or lies against the y-axis. For x² = 4ay, horizontal strips have length 2√(4ay) across the whole parabola.

Which NCERT section covers parabola areas?

Section 8.2 (Area under Simple Curves) of Chapter 8 in NCERT Mathematics Part II for Class 12.

Are areas between two parabolas asked?

No. Areas between two curves (NCERT 8.3) are not in the 2026-27 syllabus.
