Maxima and Minima: Derivative Tests and Optimisation Problems (Class 12)

Updated 15 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Solve f′(x) = 0 to find critical points. At such a point c, f″(c) < 0 gives a local maximum and f″(c) > 0 a local minimum; if f″(c) = 0, check the sign change of f′. On a closed interval, compare f at the critical points and the end points.

At the peak f′ changes + to − and f″<0 (maximum); at the valley f′ changes − to + and f″>0 (minimum); both tangents are flat.

Understand Maxima and Minima

A function has a local maximum at if for all near , and a local minimum if near . The absolute (greatest or least) value is the largest or smallest over the whole domain. At a local extreme point of a differentiable function, the tangent is horizontal, so ; such points (together with points where does not exist) are critical points. Not every critical point is an extremum: has but no maximum or minimum there.

First derivative test (motivated by the graph). At a critical point :

  • changes from to : local maximum (the graph rises then falls).
  • changes from to : local minimum.
  • does not change sign: neither (a point of inflection, like at 0).

Second derivative test (quicker when is easy). If :

  • : local maximum (the graph bends down).
  • : local minimum (the graph bends up).
  • : the test fails; go back to the first derivative test.

**Absolute extrema on a closed interval .** A continuous function on a closed interval always attains an absolute maximum and minimum. Find the critical points inside , evaluate at them and at the ends and , and pick the largest and smallest values. No derivative test is needed, but you must not forget the end points.

Optimisation (word problems). These are the 4- and 5-mark questions:

1. Draw a figure and name the variables.
2. Write the quantity to be maximised or minimised (volume, area, cost, profit) as a formula.
3. Use the given condition (fixed perimeter, fixed volume, fixed sum) to write it in one variable.
4. Differentiate, set equal to zero, solve, and reject values outside the practical range.
5. Confirm the nature with the second derivative (or first derivative test), and answer the actual question (dimensions, the maximum value, or both).

It is often easier to optimise a simpler quantity with the same extreme point, such as instead of , or to use a parameter such as an angle.

The syllabus says the first derivative test is 'motivated geometrically' and the second derivative test is 'given as a provable tool'. This is NCERT Section 6.4 and the highest-scoring part of the chapter.

How to solve Maxima and Minima questions

Use this routine for local extrema, absolute extrema and optimisation problems.

  1. 1Find , factorise, and solve for the critical points (keep only those in the domain or practical range).
  2. 2Local extrema: find and evaluate it at each critical point; negative means maximum, positive means minimum. If zero, use the sign change of .
  3. 3Absolute extrema on : evaluate at every critical point inside the interval and at and ; compare the values.
  4. 4Word problems: express the target quantity in one variable using the constraint, then follow the steps above.
  5. 5Always state the final answer in words: the point, the maximum or minimum value, and the dimensions if asked.

Maxima and Minima in real life

Each concept, met in an everyday situation. Read the situation, try the problem, then check the solution. The one-line hook is what to remember.

Maximum area with fixed perimeter

Suppose a farmer has 120 m of fencing to enclose a rectangular pen for goats on open land.

Find the dimensions that give the largest area, and the largest area.

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Let the sides be and : , so .
  2. Area .
  3. ; , so this is a maximum.
  4. ; m².

Answer: A square of side 30 m, with area 900 m².

Memory hook: Fixed fence, biggest pen: make it a square.

Minimum material for a fixed volume

Imagine a company designing a closed cylindrical can that must hold cm³ of juice, using as little sheet metal as possible.

Find the radius and height that minimise the total surface area, and the least area.

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. .
  2. .
  3. ; , a minimum.
  4. cm; cm².

Answer: cm, cm (height equals diameter); least area cm².

Memory hook: The cheapest closed can is as tall as it is wide.

Tricks to remember Maxima and Minima

Short memory aids. Say each one aloud once, then use it on a question the same day.

  • Hill and valley

Up then down ( to ) is a hilltop: maximum. Down then up ( to ) is a valley: minimum.

Use it when: First derivative test.

  • Frown for max, smile for min

: the curve frowns (maximum). : it smiles (minimum).

Use it when: Second derivative test.

  • Ends are candidates too

On a closed interval, the end points can win. Always evaluate f at a and b.

Use it when: Absolute extrema questions.

  • One variable before differentiating

Use the constraint to eliminate the extra letter before you differentiate.

Use it when: Every optimisation word problem.

Where students lose marks in Maxima and Minima

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.

  • Mistake: Forgetting the end points

On a closed interval, the absolute extremum may occur at an end point.

    Wrong working

on : values at critical points 5 and 1, so absolute max 5 only at .

    Right working

    Also and : max 5 at ; min 1 at .

Do this: Make a table of f at critical points and both ends.

Usually costs: 1 to 2 marks.

  • Mistake: Not rejecting impossible critical values

Algebra may give values outside the practical range.

    Wrong working

    Box: or ; compare both.

    Right working

would need corners longer than half the 15 cm side, so reject it; .

Do this: State the domain of the variable before differentiating.

    Usually costs: 1 mark.

  • Mistake: Skipping the nature test

A critical point may be a maximum, a minimum or neither.

    Wrong working

at , so maximum volume 486.

    Right working

, so gives a maximum; maximum volume 486 cm³.

Do this: Always show or the sign change of .

Usually costs: 1 mark in 5-mark questions.

  • Mistake: Keeping two variables

A function of two variables cannot be differentiated in one go here.

    Wrong working

    , .

    Right working

Use the constraint, for example , so .

Do this: Substitute the constraint first.

Usually costs: Most of the question.

Exam tips

  • Optimisation word problems appeared as 4- or 5-mark questions in every board paper from 2023 to 2026; draw a figure and state the domain of the variable.
  • Write a clear final sentence: 'Hence the volume is maximum when cm, and the maximum volume is 486 cm³.'
  • Use the second derivative test when is simple; switch to the first derivative test if .
  • In absolute extrema questions, present the values in a small table; it makes comparison and marking easy.
  • Simplify before differentiating: maximising or using an angle parameter often saves time.

Maxima and Minima: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between local and absolute maximum?

A local maximum is the highest value near a point; an absolute maximum is the highest value over the whole domain or interval. A function can have several local maxima but only one absolute maximum value.

When should I use the first derivative test instead of the second?

Use the first derivative test when the second derivative is hard to compute or equals zero at the critical point. It always works by checking whether f′ changes sign.

Do I need to check end points for local extrema?

No. End points matter for absolute extrema on a closed interval. Local extrema are found at critical points inside the domain.

Which NCERT section covers maxima and minima?

Section 6.4 (Maxima and Minima), including 6.4.1 on maximum and minimum values in a closed interval, in Chapter 6 of NCERT Mathematics Part I for Class 12.

How are optimisation problems marked?

Marks go to forming the function in one variable, differentiating and solving f′ = 0, confirming maximum or minimum, and stating the final answer with units.
