Air Transport and Oil and Gas Pipelines in India (Class 12 Geography, India: People and Economy, Chapter 7)
Updated 17 October 2026 · Fact-checked
Air transport is the fastest means of movement and suits India's large distances and diverse terrain. Its start was the 1911 airmail between Prayagraj and Naini. Pipelines carry liquids, gases and slurried solids over long distances: OIL's Naharkatiya-Barauni line (1,157 km) was Asia's first cross-country pipeline and GAIL's HVJ line is 1,700 km.
Understand Air Transport and Oil and Gas Pipelines in India
Why this topic matters. After roads, rail and water transport, NCERT closes land and air transport with air services and pipelines. Questions are on the beginning of air services, UDAN, Pawan Hans, the first pipeline and the gas grid.
1. Air transport.
- It is the fastest means of movement and reduces distances by minimising travel time.
- It is essential for a vast country like India, where distances are large and terrain and climate are diverse.
- Beginning: 1911, when airmail operation began over a short distance of 10 km between Prayagraj and Naini. Real development came in the post-Independence period.
- The Airport Authority of India is responsible for safe, efficient air traffic and aeronautical communication services in Indian air space.
- UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik): the Regional Connectivity Scheme conceived by the Ministry of Civil Aviation to make flying affordable for the common citizen. The central idea is to encourage airlines to operate on regional and remote routes through enabling policies and incentives; NCERT calls it a first-of-its-kind scheme globally to jump-start the regional aviation market.
- Pawan Hans is the helicopter service operating in hilly areas, widely used by tourists in the north-eastern sector; Pawan Hans Limited also serves the petroleum sector and tourism.
2. Why pipelines.
- Pipelines are the most convenient and efficient mode of transporting liquids and gases over long distances.
- Solids can also be moved by pipeline after being converted into slurry.
3. Oil pipelines: Oil India Limited (OIL).
- OIL works under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and is engaged in exploration, production and transport of crude oil and natural gas; it was incorporated in 1959.
- It built Asia's first cross-country pipeline, 1,157 km, from the Naharkatiya oilfield in Assam to the Barauni refinery in Bihar. It was extended to Kanpur in 1966.
4. Gas pipelines: GAIL (India) Ltd.
- GAIL was set up in 1984 as a public sector undertaking to transport, process and market natural gas.
- The first 1,700 km cross-country Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) gas pipeline linked the Mumbai High and Bassein gas fields with fertiliser, power and industrial complexes in western and northern India, giving an impetus to the Indian gas market.
- India's gas infrastructure has expanded more than ten times, from 1,700 km to 18,500 km of cross-country pipelines, and is expected to reach over 34,000 km as a Gas Grid linking all gas sources and consuming markets, including the North-Eastern states.
5. Comparing modes. Air is fast but suits passengers and special goods; pipelines are cheap and continuous for fluids; roads and railways carry general goods. (Comparison made by us for revision; NCERT lists the facts above.)
Graph checklist. Draw a map outline marking Naharkatiya, Barauni and Kanpur for the OIL line, and Hazira, Vijaipur and Jagdishpur for the HVJ line.

- The Gas Grid, over 34,000 km, aims to link all gas sources and consuming markets, including the North-East (1 mark).
Answer: Pipelines are the most convenient and efficient mode for moving liquids and gases over long distances, and even solids can be moved after conversion into slurry. OIL built Asia's first cross-country pipeline, 1,157 km from the Naharkatiya oilfield in Assam to the Barauni refinery in Bihar, extended to Kanpur in 1966. GAIL's first 1,700 km HVJ gas pipeline linked the Mumbai High and Bassein gas fields with fertiliser, power and industrial complexes in western and northern India, giving an impetus to the gas market.
India's gas infrastructure has expanded more than ten times, from 1,700 km to 18,500 km. It is expected to exceed 34,000 km as a Gas Grid linking all the gas sources and consuming markets, including the North-Eastern states, so supply reaches distant users without other transport.

India's cross-country gas pipelines expanded from 1,700 km to 18,500 km and are expected to exceed 34,000 km. Calculate the expansion factor so far (to one decimal) and the further length to be added to reach 34,000 km. (3 marks)
Hint
Divide, then subtract.
Answer
Factor = 18,500 / 1,700 = 10.9, consistent with NCERT's 'over ten times'. Further length = 34,000 - 18,500 = 15,500 km (both derived by us from NCERT's figures; NCERT gives 34,000 as an expectation, 'over 34,000').
Q5 · 3 marks · Short answerBoard level
Why are pipelines considered convenient and efficient for transporting oil and natural gas? Write three points. (3 marks)
Hint
Long distances, liquids and gases, slurry.
Answer
Pipelines move liquids and gases over long distances without needing other vehicles. They link producing fields directly to refineries and consuming centres, as the OIL line from Naharkatiya to Barauni and the HVJ line from Mumbai High and Bassein to industrial complexes do. Even solids can be transported after converting them into slurry.
Q6 · 3 marks · Short answerHOTS / competency
The Gas Grid is expected to include the North-Eastern states. Suggest, with reasons from NCERT, why helicopter services and pipelines both matter for the region. (3 marks)
Hint
Pawan Hans, Gas Grid, OIL's Assam start.
Answer
Pawan Hans helicopter services operate in hilly areas and are widely used by tourists in the north-eastern sector, helping access where terrain is difficult. The first cross-country pipeline started from Assam's Naharkatiya oilfield, and the Gas Grid is planned to link all gas sources and markets, including the North-Eastern states. Together they link the region with the rest of the country through air and pipeline modes.
