Ferrous Minerals of India: Iron Ore and Manganese (Class 12 Geography, India: People and Economy, Chapter 5)
Updated 16 October 2026 · Fact-checked
Ferrous minerals such as iron ore and manganese give India's metallurgical industries a strong base. India has Asia's largest iron ore reserve, mainly haematite and magnetite, with about 95 per cent in eight states led by Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. Madhya Pradesh and Odisha lead in manganese; NCERT notes that Maharashtra's manganese mines lie far from steel plants.
Notice that 95% of iron ore lies in just eight states, while Madhya Pradesh and Odisha lead manganese, which goes into steel making.

Understand Iron Ore and Manganese
Why this topic matters. Iron ore and manganese are in the syllabus map list (Mayurbhanj, Bailadila, Ratnagiri, Bellary; Balaghat, Shimoga) and are asked as distribution answers. Learn them by state, then by mine.
1. Ferrous minerals. Ferrous means containing iron. Iron ore, manganese and chromite give a strong base for metallurgical industries. India is well placed in both reserves and production. Most metallic minerals occur in the old crystalline rocks of the peninsular plateau, east of the line joining Mangaluru and Kanpur; minerals are unevenly distributed, and good-quality ores are less in quantity than low-quality ones.
2. Iron ore.
- Largest reserve of iron ore in Asia; two main types: haematite and magnetite; great international demand because of superior quality.
- The mines lie in close proximity to the coalfields of the north-eastern plateau region, an advantage.
- About 95 per cent of reserves are in Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Goa, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu (eight states).
- Odisha: hill ranges in Sundergarh, Mayurbhanj and Jhar; mines Gurumahisani, Sulaipet, Badampahar (Mayurbhanj), Kiruburu (Kendujhar), Bonai (Sundergarh).
- Jharkhand: some of the oldest mines, with most iron and steel plants around them; mines Noamundi and Gua (Poorbi and Pashchimi Singhbhum).
- Chhattisgarh: belt extends to Durg, Dantewara and Bailadila; Dalli and Rajhara in Durg.
- Karnataka: Sandur-Hospet area of Ballari; Baba Budan hills and Kudremukh (Chikkamagaluru); parts of Shivamogga, Chitradurg, Tumakuru.
- Others: Chandrapur, Bhandara, Ratnagiri (Maharashtra); Karimnagar, Warangal (Telangana); Kurnool, Cuddapah, Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh); Salem, Nilgiris (Tamil Nadu); Goa is also an important producer.
3. Manganese.
- Raw material for smelting of iron ore and for ferro alloys; found in almost all geological formations but mainly associated with the Dharwar system.
- Madhya Pradesh and Odisha are the leading producers.
- Odisha: central part of the iron ore belt: Bonai, Kendujhar, Sundergarh, Gangpur, Koraput, Kalahandi, Bolangir.
- Madhya Pradesh: belt through Balaghat-Chhindwara-Nimar-Mandla and Jhabua.
- Karnataka: Dharwar, Ballari, Belagavi, North Canara, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Chitradurg, Tumakuru. Maharashtra: Nagpur, Bhandara, Ratnagiri. Telangana, Goa, Jharkhand are minor producers.
- Disadvantage (NCERT says this of Maharashtra's mines in Nagpur, Bhandara and Ratnagiri): they are located far from steel plants.
4. Compare the belts. The north-eastern plateau (Chhotanagpur, Odisha plateau, West Bengal, parts of Chhattisgarh) has iron ore, coal, manganese, bauxite, mica together. The south-western plateau (Karnataka, Goa, adjoining Tamil Nadu and Kerala) is rich in ferrous metals and high-grade iron ore and manganese but lacks coal except Neyveli lignite.
Graph checklist. Mark Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Goa on a map outline and plot Mayurbhanj, Bailadila, Ratnagiri and Ballari for iron ore, and Balaghat and Shimoga for manganese.

Example 6: HOTS: two plateau belts compared · 5 marks · Long answerHOTS / competency
Karnataka has high-grade iron ore and manganese but almost no coal; Jharkhand has iron ore close to coalfields. Compare the two regions' advantages for the iron and steel industry and say what Karnataka's ores depend on. (5 marks)
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- North-eastern plateau: iron ore, coal, manganese, bauxite, mica in one belt; mines of iron ore near coalfields (1 mark).
- Jharkhand has the oldest mines; most iron and steel plants are around them (1 mark).
- South-western plateau: rich in ferrous metals and high-grade iron ore, manganese and limestone, but lacks coal except Neyveli lignite (1 mark).
- So the south-west is less diversified, and (our inference) any steel making there must bring coal from elsewhere (1 mark).
- Conclusion: the north-east has the location advantage for iron and steel; NCERT also notes that Maharashtra's manganese mines lie far from steel plants (1 mark).
Answer: The north-eastern plateau region, which includes Chhotanagpur (Jharkhand), the Odisha plateau, West Bengal and parts of Chhattisgarh, has iron ore, coal, manganese, bauxite and mica together. Iron ore mines occur in close proximity to the coalfields, which is why the major iron and steel industry is located here; in Jharkhand most of the iron and steel plants are around the oldest mines.
The south-western plateau region, over Karnataka, Goa and contiguous Tamil Nadu and Kerala, is rich in ferrous metals and bauxite, and has high-grade iron ore, manganese and limestone. But it lacks coal except Neyveli lignite and has less diversified mineral deposits.
So, as our own inference from these NCERT facts, steel making in the south-west would have to bring coal from elsewhere and lacks the location advantage of the north-east. NCERT also notes that Maharashtra's manganese mines lie far from steel plants.

Q6 · 3 marks · Short answerHOTS / competency
A company plans a steel plant that will draw iron ore from Kendujhar and manganese from Bonai, both in Odisha. Using NCERT's account, advise whether to site it in the north-eastern plateau region and why, and say what NCERT's remark on Maharashtra's manganese mines suggests about sourcing manganese from there. (3 marks)
Hint
Iron ore near coalfields; Bonai in the central part of the iron ore belt.
Answer
A site in the north-eastern plateau region suits it: NCERT says iron ore mines there occur in close proximity to the coalfields, which adds to their advantage, and Odisha's major manganese mines, including Bonai, lie in the central part of the same iron ore belt. NCERT notes that Maharashtra's manganese mines (Nagpur, Bhandara, Ratnagiri) are located far from steel plants, so manganese from there would mean longer haulage; drawing it from Bonai avoids that.
