Matching Your Profile to the Advertisement, Class 12
Updated 17 October 2026 · Draft, not yet fact-checked
In the job application task (Question 5, 5 marks, 120-150 words), content marks go to a letter that answers the advertisement point by point: the post and source, a profile that meets each stated requirement, evidence, availability for interview, and an enclosed bio-data. Format, organisation and accuracy complete the 1 + 1 + 2 + 1 marks.
Understand Matching Your Profile to the Advertisement
The task. Question 5 offers a letter to the editor or an application for a job with bio-data. The syllabus names it as an application for a job with a bio-data or resume. The input is a short advertisement: the post, qualifications required, experience, skills and the address for applications. You write a covering letter of 120-150 words and attach a bio-data.
Marks. Format 1, organisation 1, content 2, accuracy 1. This page is about the content marks, which depend on how well you match yourself to the advertisement.
Step 1: read the advertisement like a checklist. Underline the post, the qualification, the experience, the skills, the age or location requirement, and the address. Each is a requirement you must answer.
Step 2: answer each requirement with evidence. If the advertisement asks for a graduate with computer skills, write: I hold a B.Com degree and have completed a course in spreadsheets. Use specific evidence, such as a project, a certificate or an internship, rather than vague claims such as I am hardworking. Do not contradict the advertisement; if it asks for two years' experience, do not write that you have none unless the question says so.
Step 3: the covering letter in three paragraphs.
1. Reference and post: With reference to your advertisement in (newspaper) dated (date), I wish to apply for the post of (post).
2. Profile: qualifications, experience and skills relevant to the post.
3. Suitability and closing: why you suit the post, availability for interview, mention of the enclosed bio-data.
Frame. Sender's address and date; the receiver's designation and address; Subject: Application for the post of...; Sir/Madam; Yours faithfully; name; Encl.: Bio-data.
Bio-data. A separate sheet with headings: name, address and contact, date of birth, educational qualifications (latest first), professional qualifications, experience, skills, achievements, languages, references. Use points and keep it factual. It must agree with the letter.
Tone. Formal, confident and polite. Use active verbs such as designed, managed and organised. Do not boast or beg.
Honesty. Invent only reasonable details that fit the role given in the question, and keep them consistent between the letter and the bio-data.

Why should the covering letter not repeat the whole bio-data? Answer in 40-50 words.
Hint
Purpose of each part.
Answer
The bio-data lists all details in points, while the covering letter should highlight only what matches the advertisement. Repeating everything wastes the limited 120-150 words, loses focus and may bore the reader. The letter introduces and persuades; the bio-data supplies the full record.
Q5 · 2 marks · Short answerHOTS / competency
An applicant writes: I am the best candidate and you will regret it if you do not select me. Evaluate this sentence in 40-50 words and rewrite it.
Hint
Tone: confident, not boastful or threatening.
Answer
The sentence is boastful and rude, so it harms the tone and the impression. A letter should be confident but polite. A better version: I believe my training and experience suit the post, and I would welcome an opportunity to prove myself at an interview.

Answer in your head or on paper first, then open the card. Pulling an answer out of memory makes it stick far better than re-reading.

Matching Your Profile to the Advertisement: frequently asked questions
Should the bio-data be on a separate sheet?
Yes, write it after the letter under the heading BIO-DATA; the word limit refers to the covering letter.
What if I have no experience?
Use school or college activities as evidence and say honestly that you are a fresher.
Can I invent marks and dates?
Reasonable ones that fit the advertisement, kept consistent in the letter and bio-data.
Should I write my age?
Give the date of birth in the bio-data.
