Job Application with Bio-data Class 12: Format, Model Answers and Marking
Updated 14 October 2026 · Fact-checked
The job application with bio-data is one of two options in Q5 of Section B in the CBSE Class 12 English Core paper (the other is a letter to the editor). You answer an advertisement with a formal letter of about 120-150 words plus a bio-data, for 5 marks (format 1, organisation 1, content 2, accuracy 1).
What Job Application with Bio-data is about
A job application is a formal letter applying for an advertised post. In the CBSE Class 12 English Core paper it appears in Question 5, Section B, as one of two choices (the other being a letter to the editor). The syllabus names it as an 'application for a job with bio data or resume'. The question usually gives a short advertisement (verbal or visual input) with the post, qualifications and contact address.
Word limit: about 120-150 words for the covering letter; the bio-data is attached separately.
Marks (5): Format 1, Organisation 1, Content 2, Accuracy 1.
Two parts:
1. Covering letter: reference to the advertisement, the post applied for, a brief introduction, why you are suitable, availability for interview, and enclosure.
2. Bio-data / résumé: name, contact details, date of birth, educational qualifications, professional qualifications, work experience, skills, achievements, languages, references.
Weightage: Section B (Creative Writing Skills, 18 of the 80 theory marks): Q5, 5 marks (format 1, organisation 1, content 2, accuracy 1), one of two with the letter to the editor.Source: CBSE English Core (301) syllabus and sample paper 2026-27
In real board papers: asked in 2 of the 2 board papers we hold (2026 to 2026), on average 5 marks per paper. See the questions
Key concepts
- Format of the covering letter
1. Sender's address and date.
2. Receiver: designation, organisation, address (as in the advertisement, e.g. The HR Manager, PixelCraft Studios, Pune).
3. Subject: Application for the post of ...
4. Salutation: Sir/Madam.
5. Body:- P1: reference to the advertisement (newspaper, date) and the post.
- P2: brief profile: qualifications, experience, key skills relevant to the job.
- P3: why you suit the post; availability for interview; enclosure mentioned.
6. Complimentary close: Yours faithfully / Yours sincerely,
7. Name (signature).
8. Enclosure: Bio-data (and copies of certificates).Worked example
Write the opening sentence of a job application in response to an advertisement in 'The Hill Herald' for a Tourism Coordinator.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Refer to the newspaper and date.
- Name the post.
Answer: 'With reference to your advertisement in The Hill Herald dated 10 November 2026, I wish to apply for the post of Sustainable Tourism Coordinator in your organisation.'
- Bio-data / résumé format
Headings with brief entries:
- Name
- Address, phone, email
- Date of birth (and gender/nationality if relevant)
- Educational qualifications (most recent first: degree, institution, year, percentage)
- Professional qualifications / certifications
- Work experience (organisation, role, period)
- Skills (technical and soft skills)
- Achievements / extracurriculars
- Languages known
- References (one or two, with designation and contact)
Use points, not paragraphs. Match qualifications to the advertisement.
Worked example
Which details from an advertisement for a graphic designer should appear in the bio-data?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Required qualification (e.g. degree in design).
- Software skills asked for.
- Experience asked for.
Answer: Design degree, software skills (as listed in the ad), any internship or freelance experience, and a portfolio link.
- Content: matching yourself to the job
The 2 content marks reward relevance:
- Mention the post and the source of the advertisement.
- Show that you meet each requirement in the ad (qualification, experience, skills, location, age).
- Give specific evidence (internship, project, certificate) rather than vague claims.
- State availability for interview and enclose the bio-data.
Use only details given in the question or reasonable ones for your role; do not contradict the advertisement.
Worked example
An ad asks for 'two years' experience in customer service and fluency in English and Hindi'. Write one sentence showing suitability.
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Match both requirements explicitly.
Answer: 'I have two years' experience as a customer service executive at a telecom company and am fluent in English and Hindi.'
- Tone and language
- Formal, confident and polite; avoid boasting or begging.
- Prefer active verbs: managed, designed, coordinated, organised.
- Avoid contractions and slang.
- Keep sentences short; each paragraph has one purpose.
- Useful closings: 'I would welcome an opportunity for a personal interview.' 'I assure you of my sincere effort if given an opportunity.'
Worked example
Improve: 'Please give me this job, I really need it badly.'
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Remove pleading tone.
- Show confidence and value.
Answer: 'I believe my skills would allow me to contribute effectively to your team, and I would welcome an opportunity for an interview.'
- Word limit and presentation
- 120-150 words for the covering letter; the bio-data is attached and is not counted strictly, but keep it to the point.
- Write the bio-data on a fresh section with the heading BIO-DATA or RÉSUMÉ.
- Mention Encl.: Bio-data below your name.
- Do not repeat the entire bio-data inside the letter; highlight only what is most relevant.
Worked example
Where should 'Encl.: Bio-data' be written?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- After the signature/name at the end of the letter.
Answer: Below the name at the end of the covering letter, on the left.

How should she improve it?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Read the ad's requirements.
- Show evidence for each.
- Keep hobbies for the bio-data if relevant.
Answer: She should match her degree, data skills and projects to each requirement in the advertisement, give specific examples, and move hobbies to the bio-data.
Memory hook: Answer the ad, not your diary.
Professional tone
Imagine an application that says 'I am the best candidate you will ever find!'
Why might this hurt the application?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- Boasting sounds unprofessional.
- Evidence is more convincing.
Answer: It sounds boastful; confidence should come from evidence like qualifications and achievements, stated politely.
Memory hook: Show, don't boast.
Enclosures
Suppose an applicant forgets to attach her bio-data to the letter.
What should the letter always mention?
Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
- The bio-data is enclosed.
