Importance (Significance) of Management: Five Points (Class 12)

Updated 15 October 2026 · Fact-checked

Management is important because it helps achieve group goals, increases efficiency, creates a dynamic organisation that adapts to change, helps individuals achieve their personal objectives, and helps in the development of society through better products, jobs and technology. NCERT lists these five points as the significance of management.

Good management leads to five results; match each case cue (one target, lower cost, adapting, motivation, jobs) to its point.

Understand Importance of Management

Management is called a universal activity because every organisation, big or small, profit or non-profit, needs it. The importance (significance) of management is the answer to 'what difference does good management make?' NCERT gives five points. For each, learn the idea, the cue words a case uses, and a one-line example.

1. Management helps in achieving group goals. Individuals in an organisation have their own goals. Management gives a common direction to their efforts so that individual work adds up to the organisation's goal.
*Cue*: 'everyone was working hard but in different directions', 'the manager set one target for all'.

2. Management increases efficiency. Efficiency means reducing costs and increasing productivity. Better planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling cut waste of money, time and materials.
*Cue*: 'cost per unit fell', 'wastage reduced', 'same output with fewer resources'.

3. Management creates a dynamic organisation. Organisations work in a changing environment: tastes, technology and competition change. People inside usually resist change because it means moving from the familiar to the unknown. Management helps people adapt to change so that the firm keeps its competitive edge.
*Cue*: 'customers moved online and the firm moved with them', 'employees were helped to accept the new system'.

4. Management helps in achieving personal objectives. Through motivation and leadership, managers help each member achieve personal goals (salary, recognition, growth) while contributing to organisational goals. It builds team spirit, cooperation and commitment.
*Cue*: 'employees got promotions and training while targets were met', 'recognition boosted morale'.

5. Management helps in the development of society. A well-managed organisation provides good quality products and services, creates employment, adopts new technology and contributes to the growth and development of society.
*Cue*: 'set up a factory in a backward area and hired locals', 'introduced cleaner technology'.

Importance versus objectives. Do not mix them. Objectives (survival, profit, growth; social; personal) are what management aims at. Importance is why management matters. Point 4 (personal objectives) is an importance point because management helps people reach them.

Importance versus features of management. Features (goal-oriented, all-pervasive, multidimensional, continuous, group activity, dynamic, intangible) describe what management is. Importance describes what management does for the organisation, its people and society.

How to answer Importance of Management questions

Questions are 1-mark identifications, 3- or 4-mark 'explain the importance' items and case questions that describe what a manager achieved.

  1. 1Decide whom the benefit in the case goes to: the group's target, cost, change, employees, or society.
  2. 2Map it to the matching point (group goals, efficiency, dynamic organisation, personal objectives, development of society).
  3. 3Write the point as a heading, using NCERT's words.
  4. 4Explain it in one or two lines in your own words.
  5. 5In a case, quote the line that shows it.
  6. 6For a 4-mark 'explain any four', give four separate headings; do not merge two points.

Importance of Management in real life

The idea, met in an everyday situation. Answer the question in your own words, then compare with the model answer. The one-line hook is what to remember.

Creating a dynamic organisation

Suppose a neighbourhood stationery shop sees students buying online during lockdown. The owner trains his two assistants to take orders on a messaging app and deliver within an hour, even though they were reluctant at first.

Which point of the importance of management does the owner's action show?

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. The environment changed: customers moved to online ordering.
  2. The staff resisted the change at first.
  3. The owner helped them adapt so the shop kept its customers.

Answer: Management creates a dynamic organisation: it helps people adapt to changes in the environment so that the business keeps its competitive edge.

Memory hook: Change outside, adapt inside: that is a dynamic organisation.

Achieving personal objectives

Imagine a café manager who lets a part-time college student work flexible shifts around exams and trains her as a barista, while the café meets its weekend sales target.

Which point is highlighted?

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. The student's own goals (study time, a new skill) are met.
  2. The café's goal (weekend sales) is also met.
  3. Management linked the two through motivation and leadership.

Answer: Management helps in achieving personal objectives while contributing to organisational goals.

Memory hook: My goals and our goals, met together.

Tricks to remember Importance of Management

Short memory aids. Say each one aloud once, then use it on a question the same day.

Example 3: Two points from a case · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level

'Pragati Agro' set up a food-processing unit in a backward district, employing 300 local youth and buying vegetables directly from nearby farmers at fair prices. Its managers also trained the youth and promoted the best performers to supervisors. Identify two points of the importance of management, quoting the lines. (4 marks)

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. 'employing 300 local youth and buying vegetables directly from farmers at fair prices': development of society (1 mark + 1 mark explanation).
  2. 'trained the youth and promoted the best performers to supervisors': achieving personal objectives (1 mark + 1 mark explanation).

Answer: (1) Development of society: by employing 300 local youth and buying from farmers at fair prices, the firm creates jobs and incomes in a backward area. (2) Achieving personal objectives: by training employees and promoting the best performers, management helps them meet their goals of growth and recognition while they contribute to the firm's goals.

Example 4: Distinguishing importance from features · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level

A student wrote, 'Management is important because it is all-pervasive and an intangible force.' Is the student right? Rewrite the answer correctly with two points. (3 marks)

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. All-pervasive and intangible are features (characteristics), not importance (1 mark).
  2. Two importance points written correctly with one-line explanations (2 marks).

Answer: No. 'All-pervasive' and 'intangible force' describe what management is (its features), not why it is important. A correct answer: management is important because (1) it helps achieve group goals by giving a common direction to individual efforts, and (2) it increases efficiency by reducing costs and increasing productivity.

Example 5: Dynamic organisation in depth · 3 marks · Short answerHOTS / competency

'People in an organisation usually resist change, yet organisations must change to survive.' Explain how management resolves this, naming the relevant importance of management. (3 marks)

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. Point: management creates a dynamic organisation (1 mark).
  2. Why people resist: change means moving from familiar to unknown (1 mark).
  3. How management helps: it helps people adapt (through explaining, training, motivation) so the firm keeps its competitive edge (1 mark).

Answer: The relevant point is that management creates a dynamic organisation. Employees resist change because it means moving from a familiar, safe situation to an unknown one. Management helps them understand the need for change, trains them for new ways of working and motivates them to accept it, so the organisation adapts to its changing environment and keeps its competitive edge.

Example 6: Case study: a city bus service · 4 marks · Case-basedHOTS / competency

Suppose 'Nagar Yatra', a city bus service, was making losses. A new general manager (i) set one goal for all depots, 'every bus on time', instead of each depot chasing its own target; (ii) planned routes better, cutting diesel use by 15%; (iii) introduced digital ticketing and trained conductors who were afraid of the new machines; and (iv) started late-night buses that helped hospital and factory workers reach home safely. Identify the importance of management shown in each of (i) to (iv). (4 marks)

Try it first, then show the solutionSolution
  1. (i) Achieving group goals: one common direction (1 mark).
  2. (ii) Increasing efficiency: lower fuel cost for the same service (1 mark).
  3. (iii) Creating a dynamic organisation: adapting to new technology despite fear of change (1 mark).
  4. (iv) Development of society: a better service for the public (1 mark).

Answer: (i) Helps in achieving group goals. (ii) Increases efficiency. (iii) Creates a dynamic organisation. (iv) Helps in the development of society.

Where students lose marks in Importance of Management

The slips examiners see most often, and what to write instead.

  • Mistake: Writing features instead of importance

The two lists sound similar but answer different questions.

    Wrong working

Importance: management is goal-oriented and multidimensional.

    Right working

Importance: it helps achieve group goals and increases efficiency.

Do this: Ask 'what does management do for people?' for importance.

Usually costs: All marks for those points.

  • Mistake: Confusing efficiency with effectiveness

Efficiency is about cost; achieving the goal on time is effectiveness.

    Wrong working

Management increases efficiency by completing work on time.

    Right working

Management increases efficiency by reducing costs and increasing productivity.

Do this: Efficiency = less input for the same output.

    Usually costs: 1 mark.

  • Mistake: Merging two points under one heading

Each point earns a separate mark.

    Wrong working

Management achieves group and personal goals efficiently.

    Right working

Three separate headings: group goals; personal objectives; efficiency.

Do this: One heading per point, one explanation each.

Usually costs: 1 to 2 marks.

  • Mistake: No case evidence

Case questions reward the quoted line.

    Wrong working

    Importance: development of society.

    Right working

Development of society, as 'it employed 300 local youth'.

Do this: Quote the line after naming the point.

Usually costs: ½ to 1 mark per point.

Exam tips

  • Significance of management was a 4-mark question in the 2024-25 sample paper (Q25) and in the 2026 board paper 66/5/1 (Q26(b)), and a 3-mark question in the 2023-24 sample paper (Q21).
  • Use NCERT's five headings exactly; examiners mark against them.
  • In a case with several actions, match each action to a different point; do not repeat one point.
  • Keep the features, objectives and importance of management as three separate lists in your notes.
  • For a 'how' question (for example, 'how does management create a dynamic organisation'), explain the mechanism, not just the heading.

Practice questions on Importance of Management

Write each answer on paper first. Open the hint only if you are stuck, and the answer only when you have finished.

  1. Q1 · 1 mark · MCQBoard level

Which of the following is NOT a point of the importance of management?
    (a) It increases efficiency
    (b) It is an intangible force
    (c) It creates a dynamic organisation
    (d) It helps in the development of society

    Hint

    One option is a feature.

    Answer

    (b) It is an intangible force (a feature of management, not a point of its importance).

  2. Q2 · 3 marks · Short answerBoard level

How does management help in achieving personal objectives? (3 marks)

    Hint

    Motivation, leadership, team spirit.

    Answer

Management uses motivation and leadership to help each member achieve personal goals, such as a good salary, recognition and growth, while contributing to the organisation's goals. It builds team spirit, cooperation and commitment, so individual and group goals are met together.

  3. Q3 · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level

'Sneh Hospital' trained its nurses to use a new electronic patient-record system that many were nervous about, and within a month the system was running smoothly. Identify the importance of management highlighted and explain it. (3 marks)

    Hint

    Change and resistance.

    Answer

Management creates a dynamic organisation. People resist change because it moves them from the familiar to the unknown; by training the nurses, management helped them adapt to the new system so the hospital kept pace with changing technology and its competitive edge.

  4. Q4 · 1 mark · Assertion-reasonHarder board level

Assertion (A): Management helps in the development of society.
Reason (R): A well-managed organisation produces good quality products, creates employment and adopts new technology.
    (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
    (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
    (c) A is true but R is false.
    (d) A is false but R is true.

    Hint

What does development of society include?

    Answer

    (a) Both are true and R explains A.

  5. Q5 · 4 marks · Short answerHarder board level

Explain any four points of the importance of management. (4 marks)

    Hint

    G-E-D-P-S; pick four.

    Answer

Any four, one mark each: (1) achieving group goals: a common direction to individual efforts; (2) increasing efficiency: lower costs and higher productivity; (3) creating a dynamic organisation: adapting to change to keep the competitive edge; (4) achieving personal objectives: members' goals met through motivation and leadership; (5) development of society: quality products, employment, new technology and growth.

  6. Q6 · 3 marks · Short answerHarder board level

In 'Zenith Garments', the design, cutting and stitching teams each set their own targets and blamed one another for delays. The new manager set one weekly target for the whole unit. Which importance of management is shown? Also state one more benefit the unit may now see. (3 marks)

    Hint

    One target for all.

    Answer

Management helps in achieving group goals: by setting one target for the whole unit, the manager gave a common direction to the teams' efforts. With fewer delays and less rework, the unit may also become more efficient (lower cost and higher productivity).

  7. Q7 · 4 marks · Short answerHOTS / competency

'An organisation can be profitable without good management if its product is in high demand.' Evaluate this statement using any two points of the importance of management. (4 marks)

    Hint

Think about efficiency and change over time.

    Answer

The statement is only partly true. High demand may give short-term profit, but (1) without management increasing efficiency, costs and waste rise and competitors with lower costs take the market; and (2) without management creating a dynamic organisation, the firm cannot adapt when tastes, technology or competition change, so demand may shift away. Good management is needed to sustain profit over time.
