CBSE Class 12 Physics 2026: question 31(a)
Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2026, paper 55/1/1, section E, question 31(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q31(a) · 5 marks · Long answerElectric Charges and Fields
(a) An electric dipole consists of two point charges q and separated by a distance 2a. Derive an expression for the electric field due to this dipole at a point distant r from the centre of the dipole on the equatorial plane. Write the expression for the electric field at a far off point, i.e. .
(b) A dipole is placed in x-y plane such that charges q and are located at and respectively. There exists an electric field in the region. Calculate the force and torque experienced by the dipole.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Both charges are at the same distance from the equatorial point. Resolve their fields along and perpendicular to the axis.
Hint 2
In (b), note that both the dipole and the field lie along the x-axis.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

Where the marks are
- Field due to each charge at the equatorial point (1 mark)
- Resolution: perpendicular components cancel, axial components add (½ mark)
- Final expression with direction opposite to p (1 mark)
- Far-field expression −p/4πε₀r³ (½ mark)
- Force zero in a uniform field (1 mark)
- Torque zero, since p is parallel to E (1 mark)
