CBSE Class 12 Physics 2026: question 25
Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2026, paper 55/1/1, section C, question 25, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q25 · 3 marks · Short answerSemiconductor Electronics: Materials, Devices and Simple Circuits
An ac voltage V is applied between points A and B in a network of two ideal diodes and three resistors as shown in figure.
During the positive half-cycle of the input voltage supplied to the network.
(a) Identify which of the two diodes will conduct and why ?
(b) Redraw an equivalent circuit diagram to show the flow of current.
(c) Calculate the output voltage drops across the three resistors when the input voltage attains its peak value.
Figure in the paper: Bridge-like network. AC source connected between top node A and bottom node B. Diode D1 between P and A, diode D2 between A and R. Resistor 1 kΩ between P and R. Resistor 2 kΩ between P and B. Resistor 3 kΩ between R and B. See it in the official paper.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Decide which diode has its p-side at the higher potential when A is positive.
Hint 2
Replace the conducting diode with a wire and the other with a break, then find the branch currents with 12 V applied.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
(a) In the positive half-cycle A is at a higher potential than B.
- (anode at A, cathode towards R) is forward biased and conducts.
- (anode at P, cathode at A) is reverse biased, since its cathode is at the higher potential, and does not conduct.
- 1 mark
(b) Equivalent circuit: is replaced by a short wire and by an open switch. Current flows from A through to R. At R it divides:
- one part through 3 kΩ directly to B;
- the other through 1 kΩ (R to P) and then 2 kΩ (P to B).
So 3 kΩ is in parallel with the series pair (1 kΩ + 2 kΩ) = 3 kΩ.
- 1 mark
(c) At the peak, V and the ideal diode drops nothing, so V.
- Across 3 kΩ: V (current 4 mA).
- Current in the 1 kΩ–2 kΩ branch: mA.
- V; V.
Answer: D₂ conducts (forward biased) and D₁ does not. At peak: 12 V across 3 kΩ, 4 V across 1 kΩ, 8 V across 2 kΩ.
Where the marks are
- Identifies the conducting diode with a forward-bias reason (1 mark)
- Correct equivalent circuit with current paths (1 mark)
- Voltage drops 12 V, 4 V and 8 V (1 mark)
