CBSE Class 12 Physics sample paper 2026-27: question 26

From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2026-27, section C, question 26, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q26 · 3 marks · Short answerWave Optics

Derive Snell’s law of refraction using Huygens’ wave theory. What prediction of the wave theory was later experimentally verified?

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Draw the incident wavefront with one end just touching the boundary.

Hint 2

In the same time t, compare the distance travelled in medium 1 and the wavelet radius in medium 2.

Hint 3

Both right triangles share the hypotenuse on the boundary — use sines.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Huygens' principle: every point on a wavefront is a source of secondary wavelets; the new wavefront is the common tangent (envelope) to these wavelets. Let a plane wavefront AB be incident at angle on the surface separating medium 1 (speed ) and medium 2 (speed ). (Figure: A touches the surface first; B is still in medium 1 at distance BC from the surface point C.)

  2. In time , B reaches C: . Meanwhile the wavelet from A spreads into medium 2 to radius ; the tangent CE is the refracted wavefront at angle . From triangles ABC and AEC (common hypotenuse AC): , , so . With , , giving — Snell's law.

    1 mark
  3. Prediction verified: wave theory predicts that light travels slower in a denser medium ( when ). Foucault's experiment showed the speed of light in water is less than in air, confirming wave theory and contradicting the corpuscular theory.

Answer: sin i/sin r = v₁/v₂ = n₂/n₁, i.e. n₁ sin i = n₂ sin r; speed of light is less in a denser medium (verified by Foucault).

Where the marks are

  • Huygens' principle and construction with BC = v₁t, AE = v₂t (1 mark)
  • Geometry giving sin i/sin r = v₁/v₂ and Snell's law (1 mark)
  • Prediction: light slower in denser medium, verified experimentally (1 mark)
