CBSE Class 12 Physics 2025: question 27

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2025, paper 55/7/1, section C, question 27, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q27 · 3 marks · Short answerAtoms

Write the mathematical forms of three postulates of Bohr's theory of the hydrogen atom. Using them prove that, for an electron revolving in the n orbit,
(a) the radius of the orbit is proportional to n, and
(b) the total energy of the atom is proportional to .

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Equate the Coulomb force to the centripetal force and use mvr = nh/2π.

Hint 2

Eliminate v between the two equations; then total energy = KE + PE = −e²/(8πε₀r).

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. Postulate 1: the centripetal force is provided by the Coulomb attraction, and the electron moves in certain stable (stationary) orbits without radiating: ...(1)

    ½ mark
  2. Postulate 2 (quantisation of angular momentum): , n = 1, 2, 3, ... ...(2)

    ½ mark
  3. Postulate 3 (frequency condition): when the electron jumps from a higher orbit to a lower one.

    ½ mark
  4. (a) From (2), . Substituting into (1), gives .

    ½ mark
  5. . Hence .

    ½ mark
  6. (b) KE and PE , so . Substituting : . Hence .

    ½ mark

Answer: r_n = n²h²ε₀/(πme²) ∝ n²; E_n = −me⁴/(8ε₀²h²n²) ∝ 1/n².

Where the marks are

  • Three postulates in mathematical form (½ + ½ + ½ mark)
  • Combining the force equation with angular momentum quantisation (½ mark)
  • r ∝ n² derived (½ mark)
  • Total energy expression showing E ∝ 1/n² (½ mark)
