CBSE Class 12 Physics 2025: question 25

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2025, paper 55/7/1, section C, question 25, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q25 · 3 marks · Short answerElectromagnetic Waves

(a) Differentiate between 'conduction current' and 'displacement current', giving one similarity and one dissimilarity between them.
(b) Explain the existence of electromagnetic waves in free space, using the concept of displacement current.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Look at the two terms on the right of the Ampere–Maxwell law.

Hint 2

Faraday's law links changing B to E; which law links changing E to B?

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Similarity: both conduction current and displacement current produce a magnetic field (both appear as sources in the Ampere–Maxwell law).

    1 mark
  2. Dissimilarity: conduction current is due to the actual flow of charges in a conductor. Displacement current, , arises from a time-varying electric flux, even in vacuum (e.g. between capacitor plates), with no flow of charge.

    1 mark
  3. (b) By Faraday's law, a time-varying magnetic field produces an electric field. By the Ampere–Maxwell law, , a time-varying electric field (displacement current) produces a magnetic field. In free space , so the changing E and B fields keep regenerating each other. The result is a self-sustaining disturbance of mutually perpendicular E and B fields that propagates as an electromagnetic wave with speed .

    1 mark

Answer: Both produce magnetic fields. Conduction current is a flow of charges; displacement current comes from changing electric flux. Changing E and B fields generate each other via displacement current, so EM waves propagate in free space.

Where the marks are

  • One similarity: both produce a magnetic field (1 mark)
  • One dissimilarity: charge flow vs. changing electric flux (1 mark)
  • Explains mutual generation of time-varying E and B fields leading to an EM wave (1 mark)
