CBSE Class 12 Physics 2025: question 24

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2025, paper 55/7/1, section C, question 24, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q24 · 3 marks · Short answerElectromagnetic Induction

(a) State Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction and explain the role of negative sign in its expression.
(b) Explain, with an example, that Lenz's law is consistent with the law of conservation of energy.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Relate the induced emf to dΦ/dt.

Hint 2

Ask what would happen to energy if the induced current helped the magnet's motion instead of opposing it.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Faraday's law: the magnitude of the emf induced in a circuit equals the time rate of change of magnetic flux linked with it: (for N turns, ).

    1 mark
  2. Role of the negative sign (Lenz's law): the induced emf, and hence the induced current, is in a direction that opposes the change in flux that produces it.

    1 mark
  3. (b) Example: push the north pole of a bar magnet towards a closed coil. The induced current makes the near face of the coil a north pole, which repels the magnet. When the magnet is pulled away, that face becomes a south pole and attracts it. In both cases, work must be done against this opposing force. That mechanical work appears as electrical energy (heat in the coil). If the induced current aided the motion, energy would be created from nothing, violating conservation of energy. Hence Lenz's law is consistent with energy conservation.

    1 mark

Answer: ε = −dΦ/dt; the minus sign shows the induced emf opposes the change in flux. Work done against the opposition (e.g. magnet approaching a coil) is converted into electrical energy, as energy conservation requires.

Where the marks are

  • Statement of Faraday's law with expression (1 mark)
  • Negative sign means opposition to the change in flux (1 mark)
  • Magnet–coil example showing mechanical work is converted into electrical energy (1 mark)
