CBSE Class 12 Physics 2025: question 19

Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2025, paper 55/1/1, section B, question 19, for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.

Q19 · 2 marks · Very short answerRay Optics and Optical Instruments

A transparent solid cylindrical rod (refractive index ) is kept in air. A ray of light incident on its face travels along the surface of the rod, as shown in figure. Calculate the angle θ.

Figure in the paper: A horizontal cylindrical rod with dotted axis. A ray enters the left circular face from below-left, making angle θ with the normal (dashed horizontal axis line) and then travels along the upper surface of the rod after refraction. See it in the official paper.

Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

A ray that just grazes along the side surface is striking that surface at the critical angle.

Hint 2

The end face and the side surface are at right angles, so the refraction angle at the face is . Then apply Snell's law.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. The ray travels along the curved surface, so it meets that surface at exactly the critical angle : , so .

    ½ mark
  2. The end face is perpendicular to the curved surface, so the angle of refraction at the face is .

    ½ mark
  3. Snell's law at the air–rod face: .

    ½ mark
  4. , so .

    ½ mark

Answer: θ = sin⁻¹(1/√3) ≈ 35.3°

Where the marks are

  • Finds the critical angle from (½ mark)
  • Gets the refraction angle (½ mark)
  • Applies Snell's law at the face (½ mark)
  • Gets (½ mark)
