Hints

Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.

Hint 1

Relate the maximum kinetic energy to the stopping potential.

Hint 2

Think about the slope of the V₀–ν graph.

Hint 3

Kinetic energy can never be negative.

Step-by-step solution

Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

  1. (a) Einstein's photoelectric equation:

    ½ mark
  2. Millikan's test: Millikan measured the stopping potential for different frequencies using metals such as sodium.

The equation predicts . Millikan's versus graph was indeed a straight line.

Its slope gave a value of that agreed closely with Planck's constant. This verified the equation.

    1 mark
  3. (b) cannot be negative, so , which gives .

A photon gives all its energy to a single electron. If , that energy is not enough to remove the electron, however intense the light.

Hence emission occurs only above a minimum frequency , which is the threshold frequency of the surface.

    1½ marks

Answer: (a) (= eV₀), verified by Millikan's linear V₀–ν plot whose slope h/e gave Planck's constant; (b) K_max ≥ 0 requires ν ≥ ν₀ = φ₀/h

Where the marks are

  • Writes Einstein's photoelectric equation (½ mark)
  • Millikan's V₀ vs ν straight line, slope h/e giving Planck's constant (1 mark)
  • Explains the threshold frequency from K_max ≥ 0, i.e. hν ≥ φ₀ (1½ marks)
