CBSE Class 12 Physics 2024: question 21
Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2024, paper 55/5/1, section B, question 21, for 2 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q21 · 2 marks · Very short answerAtoms
The earth revolves around the sun in an orbit of radius m with orbital speed 30 km/s. Find the quantum number that characterises its revolution using Bohr's model in this case (mass of earth = kg).

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Bohr quantised the angular momentum.
Hint 2
Remember to convert 30 km/s to m/s before substituting.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
Bohr's quantisation condition: , so .
- ½ mark
Substituting:
- ½ mark
This is enormously large, so quantisation of the earth's orbit is not noticeable.
Answer: n ≈ 2.56 × 10⁷⁴
Where the marks are
- States mvr = nh/2π (1 mark)
- Substitutes values with v = 3 × 10⁴ m/s (½ mark)
- Gets n ≈ 2.56 × 10⁷⁴ (½ mark)
