Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
First find the focal length from the radius of curvature.
Hint 2
Use with the Cartesian signs for a concave mirror.
Hint 3
For a mirror, magnification is .
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- ½ mark
(i) By the sign convention, cm and cm. Mirror formula: gives .
- ½ mark
, so cm. The image is real and lies 60 cm in front of the mirror.
- ½ mark
(ii) Magnification: .
- ½ mark
. The image is inverted and twice the size of the object.
Answer: (i) v = −60 cm (real, 60 cm in front of mirror); (ii) m = −2
Where the marks are
- Uses the mirror formula with cm, cm (½ mark)
- Obtains v = −60 cm (½ mark)
- Writes (½ mark)
- Obtains m = −2 (½ mark)
