CBSE Class 12 Physics 2023: question 33(a)
Set in the CBSE Class 12 board exam of 2023, paper 55/1/1, section D, question 33(a), for 5 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q33(a) · 5 marks · Long answerWave Optics
(i) (1) Write two points of difference between an interference pattern and a diffraction pattern.
(2) Name any two factors on which the fringe width in a Young's double-slit experiment depends.
(ii) In Young's double-slit experiment, the two slits are separated by a distance equal to 100 times the wavelength of light that passes through the slits. Calculate :
(1) the angular separation in radians between the central maximum and the adjacent maximum.
(2) the distance between these two maxima on a screen 50 cm from the slits.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Compare the fringe widths and the fringe intensities in the two patterns.
Hint 2
Write the condition for the first maximum, d sinθ = nλ with n = 1, and put d = 100λ.
Hint 3
The linear separation on the screen is the angle multiplied by D (use D in metres).
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
(i)(1) Difference 1: An interference pattern has many equally spaced bright and dark fringes. A diffraction pattern has a central bright maximum twice as wide as the other maxima, and the secondary maxima get narrower and fainter.
- 1 mark
Difference 2: In interference all bright fringes have (nearly) the same intensity. In diffraction the intensity of successive maxima falls rapidly on either side of the centre.
(Also acceptable: interference comes from superposing two waves from two coherent narrow slits, while diffraction comes from superposing a continuous family of wavelets from every point of a single slit.)

(i)(2) Fringe width is . So it depends on any two of:
- the wavelength of the light;
- the distance of the screen from the slits;
- the slit separation .
- 1 mark
(ii)(1) For the th maximum, .
For the maximum next to the central one, , so .
With and the small-angle approximation :
rad
- 1 mark
(ii)(2) The distance between the two maxima on the screen is
Answer: (ii)(1) 0.01 rad; (ii)(2) 5 mm
Where the marks are
- Any two correct differences between interference and diffraction patterns (1 + 1 marks)
- Names two factors among λ, D and d (½ + ½ marks)
- Uses d sinθ = λ to get θ = 1/100 rad (1 mark)
- Distance = Dθ = 5 mm (1 mark)
