Q31(a) · 5 marks · Long answerRay Optics and Optical Instruments
i. Draw a ray diagram for the formation of image of a point object by a thin double convex lens having radii of curvature and . Hence derive lens maker's formula.
ii. A converging lens has a focal length of 10 cm in air. It is made of a material of refractive index 1.6. If it is immersed in a liquid of refractive index 1.3, find its new focal length.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Treat the lens as two refracting spherical surfaces, the image of the first being the object for the second.
Hint 2
Use for each surface and add.
Hint 3
For the numerical, only changes in the liquid; take the ratio of focal lengths.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.

Ray diagram (described): A thin double convex lens of refractive index is placed in a medium of refractive index . Point object O on the principal axis. A ray from O strikes the first surface ABC (centre , radius ) at A and bends towards the axis, heading to (image by the first surface). Before reaching it meets the second surface ADC (centre , radius ) and is refracted to meet the axis at the final image I. B and D are the poles of the two surfaces.
