CBSE Class 12 Physics sample paper 2023-24: question 27
From the official CBSE sample question paper for 2023-24, section C, question 27, for 3 marks. Try it first; the hints and our step-by-step solution are below.
Q27 · 3 marks · Short answerElectromagnetic Waves
Identify the part of the electromagnetic spectrum which:
a) produces heating effect,
b) is absorbed by the ozone layer in the atmosphere,
c) is used for studying crystal structure.
Write any one method of the production of each of the above radiations.

Hints
Open one hint at a time and try again before the next.
Hint 1
Which radiation do heat lamps and TV remotes use?
Hint 2
The ozone layer protects us from radiation just beyond violet; crystal spacing matches wavelengths of about 1 Å.
Step-by-step solution
Each step shows the marks it earns, as an examiner would award them. Checked by an independent re-solve from the question paper.
- 1 mark
(a) Infrared waves produce heating effect. Produced by hot bodies and by vibrations of atoms and molecules (e.g. an electric heater or a hot iron).
- 1 mark
(b) Ultraviolet rays are absorbed by the ozone layer. Produced by very hot bodies such as the sun and by special lamps like mercury vapour / arc lamps.
- 1 mark
(c) X-rays are used to study crystal structure. Produced when a metal target (e.g. tungsten) is bombarded with high-energy electrons, as in a Coolidge tube.
Answer: (a) Infrared; (b) Ultraviolet; (c) X-rays
Where the marks are
- Identifies infrared (½ mark) and gives its production method (½ mark)
- Identifies ultraviolet (½ mark) and gives its production method (½ mark)
- Identifies X-rays (½ mark) and gives its production method (½ mark)
